DESIGN OF ONE WAY SLABS

Following steps are required to be followed while designing the one way slabs:

• Step1: Calculate the thickness of the slab in accordance with the provisions of ACI Code
given the table below:

• Step2: Perform the load calculations and calculate the factored load for slab design.

• Step3: Perform the shear capacity check in accordance with ACI Code to validate the slab
thickness.

• Step4: Calculate the temperature and shrinkage reinforcement required for the slab.

• Step5: Check that the reinforcement provided in any section of the slab is not less than the
temperature and shrinkage reinforcement calculated in step4 .
NUMERICAL PROBLEMS

PROBLEM1: A reinforced concrete slab with dimensions as shown in the figure is supported on the
brick walls at all sides. The slab is reinforced with #3bars spaced at 10in c/c as shown. The
superimposed dead load on the slab is 30 Psf and live load is 30 Psf determine the factored design
load and design the slab according to the load applied. Compressive strength of concrete is 3000
Psi and density is 150 Pcf.

Data:
Superimposed dead load = DL = 40 Psf.
Superimposed live load = LL = 30 Psf.
Concrete compressive strength = Fc’ = 3000 Psi.
Density of reinforced concrete = ϒ = 150 Pcf.
Length of shorter side = la = 8 feet.
Length of longer side = lb = 20 feet.
Aspact ratio =m=?
Factored design load = Wu = ?
Slab thickness =h=?
Solution:

1. Aspact Ratio:
𝑚 = 𝑙𝑏/𝑙𝑎

𝑚 = 20/8

𝒎 = 𝟐. 𝟓 > 𝟐 (𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒔𝒍𝒂𝒃)

2. Slab thickness h: Slab thickness according to ACI Code can be calculated as

ℎ = 𝑙/20

ℎ = 8 𝑋 12/20

ℎ = 96/20

ℎ = 4.8"
or
𝒉 = 𝟓"
3. Load calculations:

Self weight of the slab = hΤ12 X density of concrete

Self weight of the slab = 5Τ12 X 150

Self weight of the slab = 62.5 Psf

Superimposed dead load = 30 Psf

Superimposed live load = 30 Psf

Factored design load on slab = Wu = 1.2 DL + 1.6LL

Wu = 1.2 (62.5 + 30) + 1.6(30)

Wu = 𝟏𝟏𝟏 + 𝟑𝟔 = 𝟏𝟒𝟕 𝑷𝒔𝒇

4. Check of slab thickness against shear:

Shear force at supports= Vu = 𝑊𝑢 𝑙Τ2

Vu = 147 𝑋 8Τ
2
Vu = 𝟓𝟖𝟖 𝒍𝒃𝒔

Shear strength of the slab as per ACI formula is given as follows:

∅ 𝑉𝑐 = ∅2√𝐹𝑐 ′ 𝑏𝑑

Now we can calculate d as

𝑑 = ℎ − 𝐶𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟 𝑐𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟 − ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑓 𝑏𝑎𝑟 𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟

We assume that #4 bar is used as the main reinforcement having diameter of 0.5”.

𝑑 = 5 − 3/4" − 0.5/2"

𝒅 = 𝟒“
Then,
∅ 𝑉𝑐 = 0.85𝑋2𝑋 3000𝑋12𝑋4

∅ 𝑽𝒄 = 𝟒𝟒𝟔𝟗. 𝟒𝟐 𝑷𝒔𝒊 > 𝑽𝒖 −−−−−− −(𝑶. 𝑲 𝒊𝒏 𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓)

PROBLEM 2: Floor of the residential unit is shown below in the figure. The slab is cast
monolithically with the beams all around. Superimposed dead and live load applied on the slab is
100 Psf and 60 Psf. Design the slab panel S2 marked on the drawing considering minimum
reinforcement required as per ACI Code and provide sketch. Also find the factored design load of
the slab. Compressive strength of concrete is taken as 4000 Psi and density as 150 Pcf. Grade 60
steel is used for reinforcement.
