QUARTILE FOR

GROUPED DATA
QUARTILE FOR GROUPED DATA
In determining the Quartiles from a grouped data in the form of
frequency distribution, the formula used in determining the median for
𝑁 𝑁
grouped data is considered but instead of , is used.

−𝐶𝑓𝑏
Thus, 𝑄𝑘 = 𝐿𝑄𝑘 + 𝑖
𝑓𝑄𝑘

where, 𝐿𝑄𝑘 = Lower class boundary

𝐶𝑓𝑏 = cumulative frequency of the class before the quartile class
𝑁 = number of data
𝑓𝑄𝑘 = frequency of the quartile class
𝑖 = size of the class interval
𝑘 = nth quartile where 𝑘 = 1, 2, 3
Example 1 : The table shows the scores of 50 Grade 10
students in the 3rd periodic test. Calculate 𝑄1 , 𝑄2 , and 𝑄3 .

Scores Frequency
46 – 50 5
41 – 45 12
36 – 40 9
31 – 35 14
26 – 30 6
21 – 25 2
16 – 20 2
First complete the table by finding the lower class boundary and
cumulative frequency.

Scores Frequency Cumulative frequency Lower boundary

46 – 50 5 50 45.5
41 – 45 12 45 40.5
36 – 40 9 33 35.5
31 – 35 14 24 30.5
26 – 30 6 10 25.5
21 – 25 2 4 20.5
16 – 20 2 2 15.5
i = ______ N = ______
Example 2. The following data give the scores of 30 students in a Math
test.
a. Construct a frequency distribution table with 6 class interval
starting with 20
b. Calculate 𝑄1 , 𝑄2 , and 𝑄3

24 32 27 23 33 33 29 25 23 36
26 31 20 27 33 27 23 28 29 35
34 22 37 28 23 35 31 43 31 26

Solution:
a. Construct first the frequency table
Range = 43 – 20 = 23

Interval = = 3.83 ≈ 4
