Process of internalizing the norms and
ideologies of society.
Socialization encompasses both
learning and teaching and is thus
"the means by which social and
cultural continuity are attained".
Charles Horton Cooley
American sociologist
who employed a
sociopsychological approach to
the understanding of society.
In 1902 he introduces the
“looking-glass self”
The looking glass self
Process wherein individuals base their
sense of self on how they believe
others view them.
Social interaction as a type of
“mirror” people use the judgments
they receive from others to measure
their own worth, values, and
behavior.
Three steps:
We try to figure out who we think we
are
We try to understand what other
people think of us
We change based on what we think
society thinks of us
