Work Permits
Why are we here?

A work permit (also known as a “permit to


work”) is a document that includes a description
of the work to be performed, the hazards
involved, the precautions to take, the required
authorizations, and other elements. It is a written
record authorizing a specific work at a specific
location, and for a specific time.

Types of Work Permits
According to OISD 105, there are four types of
work permits:-

• Hot Work Permit


• Cold Work Permit
• Confined space entry work permit
• Electrical Work Permit

Hot Work Permits
A hot work permit is required for work involving the use of
a flame or other sources of ignition.
Examples of hot work are:

welding
burning
brazing
propane soldering
oxyacetylene cutting
grinding ferrous metals

Procedures:

Before beginning any hot work,


contact the Supervising engineer to
have a Hot Work Permit issued after
they inspect that everything is in a
good condition.

Hot Work Permits
• Permits are to be issued by the contractor for the
specific job being done, and for a specific time period.
The time period is usually for the working shift, but
may never exceed twenty-four hours.

• The Supervising Engineer has the responsibility


to verify that all necessary precautions have
been taken at the worksite by the contractor.

• The work Permit has to be returned back by the


issuing authority within 30 minutes of job completion
everyday.

Necessary Precautions

• Cutting and welding equipment in good repair.

• Proper Electrical Connections with Industrial standard


instruments and equipments.

• Copper welding lead/cable, Gas hoses, backflow


preventers, fire blankets and other joints and connections
of cutting and welding equipment must be in good repair
and condition before the permit is issued.

Hot Work Permits - Summary
• Jobs like electric arc welding, brazing, gas soldering, and
oxygen-acetylene cutting and welding require hot work permits
to be issued by the supervising engineer before any work begins.

• Permits are issued for a specific job, for specific time frame,
to a specific person.

• All necessary equipment must be on site and in good working


order before work begins.

• Permits are to be returned to the person who issued them.
