 It
pertains to one’s effort to
show how gender shapes the
role of men and women in
society including their role in
development and how it affects
relations between them
Why is gender sensitivity
important?

 There is a need to train


teachers to raise their
awareness to address
prevailing gender and social
issues in academic setting and
in the society at large.

Goal# 3. Promote
gender equality and
empower women
Gender and Development
(GAD)
 -focuseson the socially
constructed basis of
differences between men and
women and emphasizes the
need to challenge existing
gender and roles
Itis specifically concerned
with the way in which
society assigns roles,
responsibilities and
expectations to both men
and women.
The theory of GAD was
developed in the 1980s as
an alternative to Women
in Development (WID)
Caroline Moser developed
a framework emphasizing
the importance of gender
relations
GENDER SOCIALIZATION IN SCHOOL
AND OTHER LEARNING SETTINGS

 Dr.
Kenneth Cushner , an
American Professor defined
gender as an important part of
an individual’s identity and one
that begins at birth.
GENDER

 It
is more that just knowing that
you are male or female.
Identification of sex is usually
clearly internalized by the age
of 3, but begins around the age
of 18 months.
SEX GENDER
*categorized as male or female *masculinity or femininity
*biological *socially,culturally, and historically
determined
*fixed at birth *learned through socialization
*does not change across time and space *varies over time and space

Gender Identity

 It includes knowledge of a large set


of rules and expectations for what
boys and girls should wear, how
they speak and eat and their place
in the overall structure of the
society

It is a form of
prejudgment, bias or
limitation given to roles
and expectations of
males and females
 Gender involves the differentiation
attributed by a given culture to
women and men in the following
aspects:
 1. social roles
 2. capacities
 3. traits and characteristics

TO IMPLEMENT GAD

 1.
Ensure that gender stereotypes
and images in existing educational
materials and curricula are
adequately and appropriately
revised and that gender sensitive
language be used at all times.

 2.Pursue capacity building in
Gender and Development (GAD)
, peace and human rights,
education for teachers and all
those involved in the education
sector.
 3. Develop and promote gender sensitive
curriculum
 4.Develop gender fair instructional materials
 5. provide scholarship programs for
marginalized women and girls to ensure that
conditions such as age, pregnancy,
motherhood, disabilities or lack of consent of
husbands shall not be grounds for
disqualification in the grant of scholarship.
 6.ensure that women faculty who
become pregnant outside of marriage
shall not be discriminated by reason
thereof, taking into account the school’s
academic freedom as constitutionally
guaranteed . They shall not be dismissed
or separated from work, forced to go one
leave , re-assigned or transferred without
due process.
 7.ensure that no female students
shall be expelled, dismissed,
suspended, refused or denied
admission or forced to take leave of
absence in any educational
institution solely on grounds of
pregnancy outside marriage during
her school term.
 8.ensure that pregnant students
shall be assisted through available
support services while in school ,
such as but not limited to
counseling to ensure completion of
their students.
 9.develop programs and policies to
prevent Violence Against Women (VAW)
including institutional mechanisms of
complaints in case of rape, sexual
harassment, and other forms of violence
and discrimination against women, and
provide assistance to students, faculty
or personnel who have been victims of
VAW.
 10.Coordinate with PNP, DOJ, CHR,
DSWD and the LGU so that
appropriate assistance are given to
female faculty and students who
are victims of rape, sexual
harassment and other forms of
violence.
