Wireless Power Transfer
3/47

 Wireless power transmission technology is not a new technology. In

1980, it was demonstrated by Nikola Tesla.

 Wireless power can be defined as the transmission of electrical energy

from a power source to an electrical load without connecting wires.

 It is reliable, efficient, fast, low maintenance cost, and it can be used for
short range or long range.

 As one of the major problems in power system are the losses occurring
during the transmission of electrical power

 The main cause for power loss during transmission is the resistance of
wires used in the grid.

 For this reason, Tesla has proposed methods of electricity

transmission using an electromagnetic induction method.

Application of Wireless Power Transfer

 Near-Field Energy Transfer

 Electric Automobile Charging - Static and Moving
 Consumer Electronics – Mobile,Laptop,Batteries,Ipods
etc.
 Industrail Purposes

 Far-Field Energy Transfer

 Solar Power Satellites
 Energy to remote areas
 Can broadcast anergy globally(in future)
Types of Wireless Power Transfer

 Microwave Power Transmission

 Microwave power transmission uses directed microwave beams to send
energy from transmitting antenna to a receiving antenna.

 The functional block diagram of WPT consists of two sections: transmitting

section and receiving section.

 Inductive Coupling Power Transmission

 Inductive coupling method is the most important methods transferring
energy wirelessly through inductive coupling.
 It is used for near -field power transmission.
 The power transmission takes place between the two conductive materials
through mutual inductance.
 The general example of inductive coupling power transmission is a
transformer.

 Laser Power Transmission

 In Laser power transmission method, a LASER is used to transfer power in
the form of light energy, and the power is converted to electric energy at
the receiver end.
 The LASER gets powered using different sources like sun, electricity
generator or high-intensity-focused light.

Advantages of Wireless Power Transmission
9/47

 WPT system completely reduces existing high-tension power transmission cables,

substations and towers between the consumers and generating station.
 The cost of the distribution and transmission become less.
 The cost of the electrical energy to the consumers also reduces.
 The power could be transmitted to places to which the wired transmission is not
possible.

Fig-Benefits Of Wireless Power Transfer(WPT) Technology .[9]

Disadvantages of Wireless Power Transmission
10/47

 High power loss

 Non-directionality
 Inefficient for longer distances
 Capital Cost for practical implementation of Wireless Power Transmission to be very
high.
 Security is required as power can be easily stolen .
 Field strength should be in safety level.
 Clear line of sight is a must for microwaves power transmission.
 MPT(Microwave Power Transmission) can cause interference problems for existing
communication systems.
 Microwaves behavior depends on media through which they travel. So, weather can
easily affect the MPT efficiency.

1. Effificient Wireless Power Transfer System Integrating With

Metasurface for Biological Applications
Long Li , Senior Member, IEEE, Haixia Liu, Member, IEEE, Huiying Zhang, and Weiming Xue
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS, VOL. 65, NO. 4, APRIL 2018

 This paper presents a novel implantable magnetic coupling resonate WPT system by
integrating with metasurface for biological applications.

 The receiver element is implanted under the skin surface 3 mm and has the dual-band
property for transferring power and data telemetry simultaneously.

 A conformal strongly coupled magnetic resonator coil is used as the transmitting coil to
construct the wireless power link.

 Also there is a integration of WPT system with negative permeability (MNG) metasurface
over the human skin surface as a miniaturized wearable device to improve the WPT
efficiency.
