VIRUSES

VIRION
 a complete virus particle that consists of an RNA or DNA
core with a protein coat sometimes with external envelopes
and that is the extracellular infective form of a virus
(medical definition)
Virus - any of a large group of submicroscopic infective agents
that are regarded either as extremely simple microorganisms
or as extremely complex molecules, that typically contain a
protein coat surrounding an RNA or DNA core of genetic
material but no semipermeable membrane, that are capable
of growth and multiplication only in living cells, and that
cause various important diseases in humans, lower animals,
or plants

LATENT VIRAL INFECTIONS

 Viral infections in which the virus is able to hide


from a host’s immune system by entering cells
and remaining dormant.
 Examples
 Once acquired, herpes virus infections (e.g., those
that cause cold sores) never completely go away;
for example, chickenpox may be followed, years
later, by shingles - both the result of the same virus.
