abstract
For the power transmission gears are the most
important components used in machines.

Being very important it is essential that these gears

are designed properly and right material is used.
There is a need for a better material so that it can
sustain more forced frequency and so that we can get
more fruitful results in shorter time.

introduction
 Gear is a tooth machined part such as a wheel or cylinder, that
meshes with another toothed part to transmit motion or to
change speed or direction
 Gears are used in most types of machinery and vehicles for the
transmission of power.
 In any pair of gears, the smaller one is called pinion and the larger
one is called gear immaterial of which is driving the other.
Types of gear
 Spur gear
 Helical gear
 Herringbone
gear
 Bevel gear
 Worm gear
 Rack and pinion
 Internal and
external gear
 Face gear
 Sprockets
Spur gear
 Spur gears are the most common
means
of transmitting power in the modern
mechanical
world.
 They vary from tiny size used in the
watches
to the large gears used in marine
speed reducers;
bridge lifting mechanism and in
railroad.
 They are vital elements of main and
ancillary mechanism in many machine
tools,
rolling mills, hoisting and transmitting
machinery
and marine engines etc.

Gear failures
 A gear fails when it can no longer
efficiently do the job for which it was
designed
Reasons for gear failures:
1. Shock loading
2. Fatigue
3. Wear and
4. Scuffing
MODES OF GEAR FAILURE
There are 5 modes of gear failures:
1. Scoring
2. Wear
3. Pitting
4. Plastic flow
5. Tooth fracture
Objective:
1. Static stress analysis
2. Modal analysis to find out Natural
frequencies
◦ Without pre stress
◦ With pre stress

ANSYS WORKBENCH PROCEDURE:
1. Prepare the assembly of spur gear in CATIA V5 and save it as
IGS format for Exporting into ANSYS work-bench
Environment.
2. Import IGS mode in ANSYS workbench simulation module.
Apply material for spur gear (structural steel).
3. Meshing criteria: Tetrahedron, element size 0.4 mm (fine
mesh).
4. Define boundary condition for analysis: Boundary condition
play the important role in finite element calculation. Here
considering both remote displacements for bearing supports
are fixed.
5. Solve for Equivalent stresses and total deformation by
applying moment.
6. Again Solve the assembly for Modal analysis considering Pre-
stress and without pre-stress separately
