PhilGBC
• The Philippine Green Building Council(PHILGBC) was incorporated on March 22, 2007 as
a national non-stock, non-profit organization that promotes the sharing of knowledge on
green building practices to the industry to ensure a sustainable environment.
• It was organized to serve as a single voice in the promotion of holistic and market-based
green building practices, to facilitate the sharing of green building information and
practices in the building industry, and to serve as a non-partisan venue for the
development of a green building rating system.
• PHILGBC has been campaigning for the transformation of design, construction and
management methods of the industry into practices that are environmentally and socially
responsible, safe and healthy, and a prosperous environment that improves the quality of
life.
• the Council is continuously developing and improving the Building for Ecologically
Responsive Design Excellence (BERDE) Rating System, the Philippines’ own green
building rating system. Initiated to facilitate greener building, BERDE measures how a
building excels above and beyond the existing local environmental regulations and
standards.
• The PHILGBC is a member of the World Green Building Council – Asia Pacific Network.
The Council is also a member organization of the International Initiative for a Sustainable
Built Environment (iiSBE), and a global partner of the GLOBE Alliance.
• a growing number of individual professionals and over two hundred and fifty (250)
corporations and organizations from the different sectors of the building industry are
currently members of the largest and greenest building initiative in the country.
BERDE
• n 2009, the BERDE Program was established by the Philippine
Green Building Council (PHILGBC) as an appropriate response to
the Philippine building industry’s need to proactively address the
negative impacts of climate change.
• The program was established to develop the Philippines’ own
national voluntary green building rating system to facilitate green
building projects in the country, inspire confidence in the industry,
and build trust in the industry.
• The BERDE Green Building Rating System is developed under
the BERDE Program. BERDE is a tool to assess, measure,
monitor, and certify the performance of green building projects
above and beyond existing national and local building and
environmental laws, regulations, and mandatory standards.
• BERDE is recognized by the Philippine government, through the
Department of Energy (DOE), as the National Voluntary Green
Building Rating System.
BERDE
Why should I use BERDE?
• As a guidance tool
• BERDE specifies current best practice. If you are a building professional,
various BERDE Green Building Rating Schemes are made freely available for your use in
designing, constructing and operating your projects in a resource-efficient, economically-
viable, and socially-responsible manner.
• As a credible marketing tool
• Getting your projects BERDE-certified provides you with a positive marketing advantage.
• Achieving a BERDE certification for your green building project lets your clients and the
public know that your project is a better building in the market. The third-party assessment
ensures that your project are assessed, rated, and certified in a credible and unbiased
process.
• BERDE also highlights your company’s sustainability initiatives.
Achieving BERDE Certification provides a positive brand recognition for both your project
and your company.
• The PHILGBC provides additional marketing support by publishing your BERDE-certified
project online, and providing opportunities for developing project case studies, hosting site
tours and certificate presentation, and speaking opportunities in PHILGBC events.
BERDE
The Core Framework of BERDE defines the different credits that are essential in developing a green
building project. The Core Framework includes:
BERDE
BERDE certified green building projects may be awarded with a 1-Star to a 5-Star BERDE rating
based on the outcomes of the assessment process.

Rating Score
★☆☆☆☆ 1 Star 51 to 60 Minimum
practice

★★☆☆☆ 2 Stars 61 to 70 Good practice

★★★☆☆ 3 Stars 71 to 80 Exemplar practice

★★★★☆ 4 Stars 81 to 90 World class

★★★★★ 5 Stars 91 and above World leader

BERDE
What is BERDE Certification?
• BERDE Certification is the formal assessment, rating, and certification process for projects of
the BERDE Program. It is conducted in a third-party assessment process to ensure a credible,
independent, impartial, and objective assessment, rating, and certification of projects
under BERD
▫ BERDE GBRS – New Construction
▫ BERDE GBRS – Operations
▫ BERDE GBRS – Renovations

• Singapore GBC
▫ BCA Green Mark
 BCA Green Mark is a green building rating
system to evaluate a building for its
environmental impact and performance. It
provides a comprehensive framework for
assessing the overall environmental
performance of new and existing buildings
to promote sustainable design,
construction and operations practices in
buildings.

Phil Green Building Initiative
The Philippine Green Building Initiative, or PGBI, is a non-profit, voluntary group of
professional associations involved with the built-environment who share a common concern
on the impacts of global warming and climate change.
MISSION

thereby provide policy advice marked by professionalism, integrity, unbiased, and high ethical
conduct with no conflict of interest.
VISION
▫ To be the leader in developing a sustainable nation by promoting energy-efficient and
environment-friendly design and construction
Phil Green Building Initiative
PGBI’s story began in 2008 when a group of engineers and architects sought to create an
industry body that will address the effects of climate change on the built environment in the
Philippine setting. This started a conversation on green buildings and related issues such as
greenhouse effect, global warming, high electricity rates, air pollution, high mortality rate in
respiratory ailments in highly urbanized areas, and various factors needing immediate
attention.

In March 2010, with careful planning and timing, the Philippine Green Building Initiative
(PGBI) was incorporated through a signing of a memorandum among the founding member
organizations, which are:
• American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers Philippines
Chapter (ASHRAE Philippines)
• Heritage Conservation Society (HCS)
• International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS)
• Integrated Institute of Electrical Engineers (IIEE)
• Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID)
• Philippine Society of Ventilating, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigerating Engineers (PSVARE)
• United Architects of the Philippines (UAP)
• Geological Society of the Philippines (GSP)
