TASK OF THEOLOGY

BIBLE 22
TASK OF THEOLOGY

 a way of thinking about important issues

from the perspective of Christian faith.
 It is the assumption that faith and
examination are inseparable.
 not a simple repetition of traditional
doctrines but a constant search for the truth
 Theology is basically the study of God.
 A person can only know and understand God
and His nature if he/she has a firm faith,
without faith a person cannot understand God.
 Human being has no capacity in studying God.
 God condescended to a form of a creature
which is stated in John 1:14
 God becomes proportionate to us, we can
now study God in the life of Jesus.
 Christ is like us human being, by knowing
Christ we are able to know God.
 the task of theology is to acquire knowledge
of God, ourselves and the world.
 We believed and witnessed what Jesus did
through the Scriptures that is why we are
able to discern God’s presence and activity
in the world.
 Theology is an articulation of the Gospel in
light of the existing socio-cultural and
ecological context.
 It is reflecting on from the perspective of
the Gospel. For us to enable believers’ to
face life’s issues and challenges.
 Theology is necessary to help the church
present a faithful, coherent, relevant and
responsible articulation of the Gospel.
 to empower the church and the people in
any given situation or context.
 Theology and Ethics are inseparable; faith is
not just a matter of knowing God but also
following or doing what Christ has done.
 Theological sources have something to do
with the human experience, condition or
situation.
TOOLS TO HELP US TO DO THEOLOGY

1. Experiences may also be an experience of

ecological disaster, situations that raises
theological questions of how does God
respond to this kind of challenges.
2. Biblically based because Scriptures has
something to speak to human given
situations it serves as our standards.
3. Tradition is also part of doing theology,
church doctrines or teachings and statements
is also relevant to what we are reflecting.
4. Culture also shapes our theology because
it is a rich resource of theologizing.
5. We may consider also other disciplines
such natural science and social science it
provides us category of analysis.
6. Reason as a human faculty also shapes our
theology, intellectually, our imagination, as
well as our intuition to understand certain
situations.
 Procedures or a step in doing or formulating
theology primarily involves human
experience or life situations.
 We understand certain situation by the help
of other disciplines.
 Hermeneutics or biblical exegesis is a tool
in understanding the background of the
Scripture and what does it say to our own
context.
 the doctrines, statements and
pronouncements that is taught by the
church combined with the human situation
and the Gospel we will then come up with a
theological reflection.
As we formulate our theology world realities
serves as the “Arena of God’s Revelation”.
 God’s intention is to be known, by faith it is
a human faculty that enables us human
being to receive the revealed knowledge of
God.
 Faith is not acquired but it is a gift of God
through the works of the Holy Spirit.
 As protestant, we use reason in receiving
the knowledge of God, for the Roman
Catholics they use reason in attaining the
knowledge of God.
 God reveals himself through history and in a
certain situation. Biblical accounts offer us
stories about how God reveals himself.
 There is no direct revelation of God; we
might sight the call of Moses in Mount
Sinai/Horeb
 Basically, it is God who initiates, God
wanted to establish a relationship in the
form of community.
 God addresses people, people also respond
shared by the community turned to a
covenant or a special relationship.
 God is community affirming and a
community that follows the will of God.
 Biblical concept of revelation is not a
communication of ideas but rather God
presents to people, an encounter of God
personal event in which we call personal
experience.
 Revelation of God is self-giving and received
by a believing heart.
 An intimate relationship between us
humans and the Creator, the part wherein
God is present in every event of our life.
