THE MEANING OF

REVELATION
DOES GOD REVEAL HIMSELF?
“Logos” is God’s word
 “Logos” is the mediating agent of God’s
self revelation
 human encounter with God is always
mediated indirectly
 No direct encounter or physical aspect
of God’s self involve but rather it is
always channeled through a certain
medium of disclosure such as the
Scripture.
 The word of God, the Law or the Torah
through the help of the prophets served
as a concrete example of God’s
revelation to the people and in certain
events in the Old Testament
 Ten Commandments served as an
instruction for the people of Israel to obey
and also it represents God
 New Testament the Logos or the word
of God was made flesh in the person of
Jesus Christ
 The word of God also was mediated
through the mouths of the prophets
 God is truly present in Jesus Christ and
the word was ultimately made flesh
 God is truly present in Jesus
 Jesus was the perfect revelation of
God, as well as the embodiment of God
 We are able to personally encounter
God through His teachings and on how
the way He present the goodness of God
to the people.
 The revelation of God is not also
possible without the help of the Holy
Spirit
 To confirm and discern what God has
done to us
 To speak that God is present in good
and in bad times.
 The Holy Spirit is the enabling power of
God.
 God’s intention is to reveal Himself to
us.
 It is always God that initiates not us and
basically in God’s own time.
 God uses several means to reveal and
communicate Himself in our culture,
socio-ecological, and political.

 God’s intention is to be known. Not to

remain unknown
TWO TYPES OF REVELATION
1. General
God’s self-disclosure through the
nature and human conscience primarily it
shows that God is the source of
everything that exists in the world.
 No one is deprived to know God,
human being receives a communication
from the nature that there is God.
 Everybody is given a chance to know
God
 a God that sustains the nature because
everybody or every human being has the
capacity to discern or understand God
through nature.
 human prism can be corrupted by sin;
the message of God can be distorted
also by human beings
 This may affect religion and can be
abused and be distorted to advance ones
personal interest.
 human vested interest or human
sinfulness of the general revelation is
subject to human manipulation.
2. Special
Focused on God’s will of
communicating. It is God’s self disclosure
to a particular person, particular situation
and particular historical events.
 The Exodus event as an example
wherein Moses was called through the
burning bush; undeniably it was only
Moses who experienced it.
 This event has not only made an impact
to Moses but also it was the turning point
of their faith
 Likewise, Jesus Christ is the most
focused revelation of God to the
Christians wherein God’s reality is
present.
 Revelation has manifested the
goodness and graciousness of God to
the people ultimately to establish a
community.
