RESEARCH PROPOSAL

A COMPERATIVE STUDY TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STRUCTURED

TEACHING PROGRAMME versus POCKET REFERENCE ON KNOWLEDGE
REGARDING ABG ANALYSIS AMONG STAFF NURSES OF SELECTED HOSPITALS
OF NAVI MUMBAI.

PRESENTED BY
KHIRABDHI TANAYYA SAHU
MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING
1ST YEAR MSC NURSING
DATE OF PTESENTATION—21FEB 2020
BVDUCON
NEED OF THE STUDY
**Most of the times we see that patients who are going to icu initially
there are 60% of patients are admitted in wards.so it is really necessary
to gain the knowledge and continuing education about ABG for ward staff
nurses.
**in health care sectors because of rotational shifts when there is a
shortage of staffs that time nursing supervisors are giving posting to
different areas to all nurses (it may be ward ,icu ,emergency).

**The life threatening condition is can occurs in any areas in any time with
the patients in the health care system so it is really necessary to gain the
continuing education on knowledge to all nurses.
** All the nurses are required to have specialized skills and knowledge to enable them
to critically think rapidly in life-threatening situations.
**sampling represents the gold standard method for acquiring patient’s acid-base
status. Arterial blood gas analysis has become an essential skill for all healthcare
practitioners.
**It provides important information with regard to adequacy of ventilation, oxygen
delivery to the tissues and acid–base balance.
**Although each patient’s clinical presentation will be judged individually, situations
that warrant analysis of a blood gas sample include respiratory compromise, post-
cardiorespiratory arrest, evaluation of interventions such as oxygen therapy, respiratory
support and as a baseline before surgery.
**2 Reasons to utilize ABG’s in the assessment process include determining the need
for and treatment of pulmonary disease, and determining acid-base balance in a patient
with heart failure, renal failure, uncontrolled diabetes, a sleep disorder, severe infection,
and drug overdose (Youngerman-Cole, 2006).
• The arterial blood gases is one of the most important investigation for
assessment of clinical oxygenation and acid-base status in critically ill
patients, it provides us with information about ventilation, oxygenation, and
acid-base status. [Cardio Thoracic centre Pune 2004}

• ***Dodds (2007) Nursing time stated that assessment for long-term

oxygen therapy are now being undertaken by respiratory nurse specialists.

The key skill required is arterial blood gas sampling, This has traditionally

been the role for the doctor, however by using an education and training

package along with a competency based assessment, nurses can know to

perform., this extended role.

TITLE OF THE RESEARCH STUDY
• A COMPERATIVE STUDY TO ASSESS THE
EFFECTIVENESS OF STRUCTURED TEACHING
PROGRAMME VERSUS POCKET REFERENCE
ON KNOWLEDGE REGARDING ABG ANALYSIS
AMONG STAFF NURSES OF SELECTED
HOSPITALS OF NAVI MUMBAI
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
• 1.To assess the knowledge in relation to ABG
analysis before the structure teaching
programme and packet reference among staff
nurses.
• 2.To assess the knowledge in relation to ABG
analysis after the structure teaching programme
and packet reference among staff nurses.
• 3.Find out the association between the pre
interventional knowledge score among staff
nurses in relation to ABG analysis and selected
demographic variables.
HYPOTHESIS

1.H01- There is no difference in the knowledge in

relation to ABG analysis among staff nurses before
the structure teaching programme
2.HO2-There is no difference in the knowledge in
relation to ABG analysis among staff nurses before
the pocket referance
3.H02 -There is no association between the pre-
interventional knowledge score among staff nurses
in relation to ABG analysis and selected
demographic variables.
OPERATIONAL DEFINATIONS
effectiveness
• . Effectiveness is the capability of producing a desired result or
the ability to produce desired output. When something is
deemed effective, it means it has an intended or expected
outcome, or produces a deep, vivid impression.
• in my study effectiveness means outcome of structured
teaching programme on knowledge among staff nurses.
Structured teaching programme:
• According to oxford dictionary “A list of events or procedure of giving
systematic planned instruction to a person or group, it is a method of
teaching about a subject and is transferred to one group to other.”
• In this study “Structured teaching programme refers to systematically
planned instruction designed for staff nurses to provide information on
Arterial blood gas analysis using lecture-cum-discussion method for 4-5
staff at a time, for duration of 25-30 minutes ,using power point
presentation,
Knowledge:
According to oxford dictionary knowledge means ,
understanding and skills gained through education
/experience.
In this study, knowledge refers to awareness in relation
to ABG analysis among staff nurses assessed using a
structured interview schedule.
ABG analysis
• According to Wikipedia An arterial-blood gas (ABG)
test measures the amounts of arterial gases, such as
oxygen and carbon dioxide .
• In my study ABG analysis refers to definition purposes
,indication contraindications steps of procedure and
interpretation of results .
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
A study to assess the knowledge regarding ABG analysis and interpretation of ABG results among
staff nurse in NMCH, Nellore
Author -K Padma, Anju Priya, N Subhashini and Dr. Indira S
Abstract
• Background: An arterial blood gas (ABG) study
as a blood test that measures that levels of many
different gases the oxygen rich blood, some of
these level measured directly while other are
calculated from the measurement of other gases.
By measuring the gases in arterial blood.
• Objective: To assess the level of knowledge
ABG analysis and interpretation of ABG results
among staff nurse in NMCH, Nellore.
• Materials and Methods: Descriptive cross
sectional design and convenient sampling
technique was followed which included 30
samples were used. Data was collected using
structured questionnaire. Data analysis was done
with SPSS.
• Results: Shows that with regard to ABG analysis
and interpretation results among 30 staff nurses, 4
(13.3%) had ‘A’ grade, 7(23.3%) had B+ grade, 12
(40%) had B grade, 5 (16.7%) had C grade and 2
(6.7%) had D grade knowledge and mean value
was 19.0 and standard deviation was 3.5 in staff
nurses. Conclusions: The study concluded that
majority of staff nurses had D grade knowledge.
