ABRA

 Abra was created as a politico-military province in 1846, prior to


which was part of the old Ilocos Province and later Ilocos Sur when
Ilocos Region was divided into two provinces in 1818. Civil government
was established in Abra on August 19, 1901, but was re-annexed to
Ilocos Sur in February 1905.
PEOPLE

 The first inhabitants of Abra were the ancestors of the Bontocs and
the Ifugaos. These inhabitants eventually left to settle in the old
Mountain Province. Other early inhabitants were the Tingguians, or
Itnegs, as they are also known.

APAYAO

 At the end of the Spanish regime, Apayao was divided into two separate
"Politico Commondancias" for administrative purposes, namely, Apayao and
Itawes. These were established in 1901 as part of Cagayan province. In 1907,
Apayao and Itawes became separate sub-provinces.
PEOPLE

 The earliest residents of Apayao Province (Cordillera Administrative Region)


and one of the remaining tribes in Luzon, the Isneg are a small ethnoliguistic
group inhabiting the wide mountains of the area. They are concentrated
mainly in the municipalities of Kabugao, Conner, Luna, and Pudtol. Various
names have been used to differentiate the Isneg.

 was known as the Cordillera's Last Frontier for Nature’s Richness for its
pristine waters and other natural wonders and also known for their Cool
weather and lush greenery.
 The people of Apayao celebrate the Apayao Founder's Day to reminisce with
joy the invaluable contributions of EKB who made possible the separation of
then one province of Kalinga-Apayao. The celebration is pursuant to a
Provincial Ordinance enacted on 2017 by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of
Apayao.

BENGUET

 The name Benguet was first pronounced in La Trinidad, a thriving settlement


at the crossroads to the lowland trading sites during the period of Spanish
expeditions. La Trinidad then was a settlement around a lake alive with
wildlife, wallowing carabaos dotted with patches of taro, rice, gabi and
camote.
PEOPLE

 The Ibaloi people were traditionally an agrarian society. Many of the Ibaloi
people continue with their agriculture and rice cultivation.

 Benguet is popularly known as the "Salad Bowl" of the Philippines because


virtually every type of vegetable used in salads is produced here.
 They all believe that spirits and supernatural beings exist who are responsible
for bestowing blessings and bounties when they are pleased and honored, as
well as inflicting pain and suffering when they are displeased and not heeded.
 "Strawberry Country" has been added. Various species of luscious
strawberries, a rarity in the tropics, are now being raised in Benguet.

IFUGAO

 The name of the chosen culture is Ifugao. The origin of the Ifugao comes from
the term Ipugo, which means “from the hill”. According to their mythology,
their name is derived from Ipugo which refers to the rice grain given to them
by their God, Matungulan.
PEOPLE

 The Ifugao call themselves as i-pugao or "inhabitants of the known earth";


other variations of the name are Ifugaw, Ipugao, and Yfugao.

 The Ifugao (Ifugaw, Ipugao, Ypugao, Hilipan, Quiangan) are world-famous for
their spectacular rice terraces especially in Mayaoyao.

 Their war-dance (the bangibang) is one of the cultural remnants of the time
of tribal conflict.

 Ifugao name means "inhabitant of the known world."

KALINGA

 The name "Kalingga" is believed to have been derived from the Ibanag word
"kalinga" and the Gaddang word "kalinga", both meaning headhunters.
PEOPLE

 the Kalingas are noted for their strong sense of tribal awareness and the
peace pacts they have made among themselves. The Kalinga are divided into
Southern and Northern groups; the latter is considered the most heavily-
ornamented people of the northern Philippines.

 The name Kalinga believed to have originated from the Gaddang and Ibanag
languages, means “headhunter.

 The Kalinga speak mutually intelligible dialects of the same Austronesian


language.

 Among supernaturals, Kalinga believe in the ngilin, a malevolent water spirit


in the form of a human pigmy who prevents women from conceiving; it also
victimizes newborns.

MOUNTAIN PROVINCE

 The old Mountain Province used to belong partly to the Ilocos Region (Region 1)
and the rest to the Cagayan Valley (Region 2).
PEOPLE

 The Kankanaey’s domain includes Western Mountain Province, Northern


Benguet, Southeastern Ilocos Sur. Like most Igorot ethnic groups, the
Kankanaey built sloping terraces to maximize farm space in the rugged terrain
of the Cordilleras.

 was known as the Weaver’s Paradise for its various weaving centers
brandishing designs of the rich cultural heritage of the province and also for
their cool weather and rice terraces.

 was established by the Philippine Commission in 1908 with Samuel Cane as its
appointed governor.

 Formerly dubbed as " La Montañosa" by Spanish administrators for its


mountainous terrain, Mountain Province lies in the heart of the Grand
Cordillera
