DEFINITIONS OF TERMS
• Asymmetrical – having
balance or symmetry
• Balance – a state of
equilibrium or parity
characterized by cancellation
of all forces by equal opposing
forces
• Cacha – a kind of cotton

• Colorfast – do not fade
easily
• Design – a blueprint
• Emphasis – a special attention
or effort directed toward
something
• Harmony – means a
relationship of different
portion of a design
• Hue – the family or group
name of a color

• Proportion – part considered
in relation to the whole

 BALANCE
- According to this principle,
from the center of the dress,
design should be identified on
both sides and is achieved
through:
a. Symmetrically or formal
balance – can be described as
having equal weight on equal
sides.
b. Asymmetrically or informal
balance – the structure
decoration and accessories are
different both sides from the
center of the design.
c. Proportion – is the
pleasing relationship of all
parts of the object with one
another. It refers to the
relative size and scale of the
various elements in a design.
EMPHASIS
- a part that is more
interesting than any other or
it is the center of the design.
RHYTHM
- these are smooth
movements repeated again
and again. If there is rhythm
in a design, the eye would
move easily from one part to
another.
Three ways to create rhythm:
a. Repetition of lines, colors or
accessories. In garment, parallel
lines are formed by the use of
seams, buttons, lace, etc. which
helps uninterrupted eye
movement.
b. Radiation. Rhythm can
be also created by
radiated lines. Such lines
an be seen in gathers on
neckline, arm, and skirt.
c. Gradation – it can be
created by gradual change
of line, shape or shade of
the color.
HARMONY
- Means a relationship of
different portion o a design.
It can be achieved through
judicious use of color, shape,
and texture to give a feeling
of oneness.
