What is hubble?

• a telescope launched into
orbit around the earth in 1990
to provide information about
the universe in the visible, and
ultraviolet ranges Also
called Hubblespace telescope
Works
• Earth's atmosphere changes and blocks some
of the light that comes from space.
• Hubble flies around, or orbits, high above
Earth and its atmosphere.
• So, Hubblecan see space better
than telescopes on Earth .
• Then Hubble uses radio waves to send the
pictures through the air back to Earth.
Mirrors/ Distance
• 240 centimetres in diameter because it is far
above the dusty, cloudy atmosphere of the
earth. It can see much more clearly into outer
space.
• Distances in space are so huge which we
cannot measure in kilometres and
Light years
• astronomers use light years
• The distance light which travels in a year.
• 299,792,458 metres per second
• 9.5 trillion kilometres (9,500,000,000,000) in a
year.
• One billion in an hour.
Stars
Apollo 11,
• Apollo 11 was taken from moon in 1969
by astronauts
• 16 july launched
• 20 july landing
• Speed of rocket 40,000kph.
Nearest star
• 32,000,000,000km from earth
• It reach in 91.3 years

The moon
Phases of moon
• First of all, the changes in the amount of the moon’s
surface that is lit up over the course of a month are
called phases. The next thing to know is that the
light we see coming from the moon isn’t moonlight
at all, it is sunlight. The moon does not emit any light
itself. The Sun’s light is reflected from the surface of
the Moon to us.Because the positions of the Earth,
Moon and Sun vary throughout the course of the
month, the amount of the moon’s surface that we
can see changesa little bit every night.
• When the surface of the side of the moon facing Earth is
completely illuminated, we see a full moon. When none of
the surface is illuminated and we can’t see the moon at
all, the phase is a new moon. The phases when half the
side of the moon facing Earth is lit up are called the first
and third quarters. When the visible moon seems to be
getting bigger, we say it is waxing, when the visible
lighted surface seems to be getting smaller, we say the
moon is waning. When less than half of the visible moon
is lit, it’s called a crescent, and when it’s more than half,
it’s called a gibbous.
• Astronomers have observed the phases of the
moon for thousands of years and have found
that it takes 29 ½ days for the moon to go
through its entire phase cycle. This is called
a lunar month. That means that the months
on the calendar we use don’t exactly match
the phases of the Moon.Have you ever heard
the phrase “once in a blue moon”
• A blue moon occurs when there is a second
full moon during the same month. For
example, there could be a full moon on
October 2nd and another on October 31st, just
in time for Halloween.A blue moon occurs
every 2 ¾ years.
Eclipses
•What Is an Eclipse?
•When Earth passes directly
between the sun and the moon, a
lunar eclipse takes place.
• What Is a Lunar Eclipse?
The moon orbits, or goes around, Earth. Earth
orbits, or goes around, the sun. Once in a
while, Earth lines up directly between the sun
and the moon. When this happens, Earth
blocks the light from the sun to the moon.
Earth's shadow then falls on the moon. This is
an eclipse of the moon. It is called a lunar
eclipse.
• During a lunar eclipse, we can see Earth’s
shadow on the moon. When Earth completely
blocks the sunlight, the moon looks red or
orange. A lunar eclipse can last for a few
hours. At least two lunar eclipses happen
every year
• What Is a Solar Eclipse?
Sometimes when the moon orbits Earth, it
lines up directly between the sun and Earth.
When this happens, the moon blocks the light
of the sun. This causes an eclipse of the sun,
or a solar eclipse. During a solar eclipse, the
moon casts shadows onto Earth.
• A solar eclipse happens during the daytime.
The daylight grows dim. Sometimes the moon
blocks almost all of the sunlight. Then the
daytime can look as dark as night during a
solar eclipse!
• Solar eclipses happen once every 18 months.
Solar eclipses only last for a few minutes.
• Why Does NASA Study Eclipses?
NASA scientists want to learn more about the
moon. They took the moon's temperature
during a lunar eclipse. They wanted to see
how fast the moon cooled when Earth's
shadow was on it. This helped NASA learn
what the moon might be made of. The moon
is our nearest neighbor, yet there is still much
to learn about it.
• NASA can study the top layer of the sun during
some solar eclipses. The moon blocks the
brightest rays of sunlight. This makes it easier
for scientists to see the top layer of the sun.
Scientists use tools on Earth and tools in space
to take pictures of the sun. Then they study
what they see.
• Did You Know? You should NEVER look directly
at the sun --not even during an eclipse when
the moon blocks the sunlight! A solar eclipse is
exciting. But looking at the sun is dangerous.
It can damage your eyes.
