AIMS OF MENTAL HEALTH

ACT 2001
1. Provides a framework for the delivery of
comprehensive care, treatment, control,
protection and rehabilitation of those with
mental disorders.

2. Governs the establishment of private and


government psychiatric hospitals,
psychiatric nursing homes and community
mental health centres.
BOARD OF VISITORS IN MENTAL HEALTH
HOSPITAL AND NURSING HOMES
APPOINTMENT
(1) The Minister shall appoint a Board of Visitors for
each psychiatric hospital and psychiatric nursing
home.
(2) Board of Visitors shall consist of not less than
three members :
 Psychiatrist

 registered staff nurse who does not work in that


nursing home
 one other person, and one of Visitors shall be a
female person.
FUNCTION AND DUTY BOARD OF
VISITORS

1. Visit psychiatric hospital or psychiatric


nursing home.
 psychiatric hospital at least once in every month
 psychiatric nursing home at least once in every three
months
 To inspect welfare, health, adequacy of opportunities
and facilities , premises, any register, book, order,
certificate or other documents relating to the
admission and discharge of persons admitted into the
psychiatric nursing home and hospitals.
2. Report of Visitors.
 after each visit, submit report to the
Director General.

3. Responsible to ensure that the


treatment of all persons admitted,
either voluntarily or involuntarily is
consistent with established clinical and
other professional standards

4. Confidentiality of information by
Visitor.
NURSING
RESPONSIBILITY
Admitting patient to psychiatric unit/ward

1. Orientation to the ward and medical staff


2. Interview the patient about the past history and
their current problems.
3. Ask patient have brought any medication from
home
4. Nurse should introduce themselves to each new
patient within a few days of admission
5. Assessing and planning nursing care requirements
6. Building relationships, reassuring, listening and
talking to patients
7. Combating stigma and helping patients and
their families deal with patient condition
8. Administering medication
9. Reviewing care plans and monitoring progress
10. Giving advice and arranging support for
patients, relatives and carers
11. Cooperate with doctors, social workers and
other professionals
12. Writing and updating patient records
13. Encouraging patients to take part in therapeutic
activities such as art and role play
