Probability of a union of two

Events
TERMS TO REMEMBER:
Experiment

• Activities which could be repeated over and

over again and which will have defined results.
– Examples:
» Rolling a die, tossing coin and randomly choosing a ball
from a box.
Sample Space
• set of all outcomes in an
experiment
–Example: (tossing a coin 3
times)
»Sample space =
(Heads,Heads,tails)
EVENT
• Subset of sample space
2 types of Events
• Simple Event

• Compound Event
Simple Events
• Events
where one experiment happens at a
time and it will be having a single outcome

• P(E)=
• P(E)=
Example
• What
is the probability of getting head in tossing a
coin once.
• Sample space=( Head, Tail)
• Event =getting head
• P(E)=
=
Therefore the probability of getting head in tossing a
coin once is 50% or ½
Take note;:Probability will on line between zero and 1
Compound Event
• Events which consists of more than one
outcome.
• Consists of 2 or more simple events
• Example: What is the probability of getting 3
and 5 in rolling a die.
TRY!
• Rolling a die. A die is rolled once. Let A be the
event of showing an even number and B be
the event of showing a prime number. List
down all the elements of A and B. Represent
in Venn Diagram the intersection and union of
events if applicable.
Answer
• A  =
• B=

• (A U B)=
• (
• A’=
• Universal set =
