helping people change
• Groups are the treatment of choice
• Groups provide a natural laboratory and sense
of community demonstrating to people that they
are not alone
• Members participants have the opportunity to try
out different strategies for resolving their long-
term problems

Group Process
• Group process – all the elements that are basic
to the unfolding of a group from beginning to end
• Examples:
• Group norms

• Task group – aims to foster accomplishing identified
work goals

• Psychoeducational group – aims to provide members


with targeted education on a variety of psychological
issues or informational deficits

• Counseling groups – aims at preventive and


educational purposes — utilizes methods of interactive
feedback within a here-and-now time framework

• Brief groups – time limited, structured groups with

Brief Group Therapy
• Time limited, structured, lasts 2 to 3 months, and consists of
8 to 12 weekly sessions
• Facilitators need training in group process and brief therapy
• Advantages of brief group therapy
• Well suited to the needs of both clients and managed
care
• Cost-effective
• Widely applicable to diverse client populations and
problems
• Can be used in different settings

• Culturally Skilled Group Counselors need to:
• Be aware of their own personal values, attitudes,
biases, assumptions, and prejudices
• Have a general knowledge about the ways the
diverse backgrounds of members may affect the
group process
• Be able to implement interventions that are
appropriate for the life experiences of the
members of the group
