• consists of stories rooted in reality (could
actually happen) but the character are
fictionalized
• nothing in the story connects itself to a
time or event in history, but focuses on
problems facing children’s lives today
such as divorce, a new sibling, or teen
issues.

1930s through the early 1960s depict
some of the strongest, warmest family
relationship in contemporary realistic
fiction for children

- Children face numerous
challenges when they venture from the
family environment and begin the often
difficult process of growing up.
SURVIVAL
- Physical and emotional survival
are fundamental challenges. The
strong personalities of survival
literature are especially popular with
older children who enjoy adventure
stories.

DEATH
- Part of growing up is realizing
and gradually accepting the fact of
death
