Progression

Sequences
•“A  sequences is an arrangement of numbers in a
definite order according to a certain rule.”
Example:
•Q.  Write the first four terms of the following
sequences whose general terms are

3.
4.
5.
•   Arithmetic Progression (A.P.)

A sequence is said to be A.P., if there is a common

difference between any two consecutive terms,
The standard form of an AP is a,a+d,a+2d,…,a+(n-1)d,…

Where a is the first term; d is the common difference and is

the nth term of the AP and it is denoted by .

𝒕 𝒏=𝒂+(𝒏−𝟏)𝒅

• .  Write down the series whose term is . Is it an arithmetic
Q
progression?
Solution:

Putting we get
and so on.
The sequence is,

Now, ,
So it is an AP with common difference
•   Find the term and the term of the sequence
Q.
3,8,13,18,…
Solution: Given sequence is 3,8,13,18,…
Here and so on.

It is an A.P. with a=3 and d=5

The term of an AP is given by

Now, the term==5x25-2=123

The term is 123.
•Q.  Find the 51th term of an A.P., whose first
term is -70 and common difference is

Solution:
51th term is 55
•  Determine the arithmetic progression, whose term is 34 and
Q.
term is 74. Also find the 50th term of the A.P.
Solution:
Let a and d be the first term and the common difference
respectively.
The term of an AP is given by
Given that and .

Solving (1) and (2), we get d=5 and a=4

A.P. is given by a,a+d,a+2d,a+3d,…
The required A.P. is 4,9,14,19,…
50th term of this A.P. is
The 50th term is 249
•   Sum of n terms of an A.P.

Let {} be an A.P. and d be the common difference and n be the

numbers of terms pf the A.P.
Then the sum is given by

Where denote the required sum.

𝒏
𝑺 𝒏 = [ 𝟐 𝒂+ ( 𝒏 −𝟏 ) 𝒅 ]

•Q.  Sum up the following Series:

1.

2.
•If are
three successive terms of an A.P. then b is the
arithmetic mean of a and c.

Thus, middle term of any three consecutive terms of

an A.P. is half of the sum pf the first and the third
terms.
•Some
  important series and their sum:
•  First and the eight terms of an A.P. series are 2 and 23
Q.
respectively. Find the tenth term of the series.
Ans. : 29
Q. How many terms of the series will add up to 126?
Ans. : sum of first 7 terms and first 12 terms.
Q. For what value of K the following series will be in arithmetic
progression?

Ans. :
Q. Suppose X repays a loan of ₹3250 by paying ₹20 in the first month and
•
then increases the payment by ₹15 every month. How long will he take to
clear his loan?
Solution: Given
The total loan amount
Payment of the first instalment
Increment
To find the value of n.
We know that

Using the value of , a and d ,we have

Solving this quadratic equation:

Number of instalments cant be negative hence requires month for clear loan is
20 months.
•  A person deposited ₹5000 in a savings bank account at the
Q.
end of first year and every succeeding year, he deposited
₹100 more than the preceding years. What amount has he
deposited at the end of 20th years?
Solution:

Let a be the initial deposit in first year and d be the increment in

the annual deposit.
Here a=₹5000 and d=100
Amount deposited at the end of 20th year,

The required amount is ₹6900
