Flood
• WHAT IS FLOOD?

• Floods can occur anywhere after heavy rain events. All floodplain are
vulnerable and heavy rain or thunderstorms can cause flash flooding in any
part of the world. Dikes or flood leeve can overtop, causing floods when the
rivers carry large amounts of water. Dam breaks or sudden regulatory
operations such as the release of water for hydro-electric power generation
can also cause catastrophic flooding. Floods threaten human life or
property worldwide. Some 1.5 billion people were affected by floods in the
last decade of 20th century (WMO).
• Floods is the overflowing of water from streams and other bodies of
water or an accumulation of rainwater in low-lying areas. Flood can
cause severe damage to properties and considerable loss of lives.
Flood is a temporary rise of the water level of a river, stream or other
water channels, resulting in the overflowing of the water above its
bank and inundating the adjacent land areas, which are not normally
covered by water.
PREPAREDNESS OCCURRENCE
BEFORE FLOOD
• Be aware often your location is likely to he flooded and to what extent.
• Know the flood warning system and evacuation plan of your community and
make sure your family knows them.
• Designate an evacuation area for the family and livestock and assign family
members specific instructions and responsibilities according to the evacuation
plan.
• Maintain adequate emergency food supplies requiring little cooking and not
needing refrigeration, and drinking water (good for at least 3 days).
• Have flashlight and a battery-operated radio or mobile phone ready.keep
extra fresh batteries, matches, candles or fuel for kerosene lamps and cooking
equipment.
• Keep ready additional items like first aid kit, ropes,rubber bootsand life
vest,bamboo rafts and inflated interior tubes of motor vehicle tires can be
very useful during emergencies.
• Keep tuned-in to radio or television broadcast. Keep informed of the daily
weather conditions and forecast from PAGASA. Maintain contact with your
BDRRMC for official advisories and instructions regarding the flood
situation.
Response During Flood
Occurrence
• Stay indoors
• Do not attempt to cross rivers with flowing streams where water is
above the knee and rising.
• Beware of water-covered roads and bridges.
• Do not swimming or boating in swollen rivers.
• Beware of contaminated food and water.
Response After Flood
Occurrence
• Re-enter your house with caution using flashlights,lantern,or torches.
Flammable and dangerous animals like snake,may be inside.
• Be alert for fire hazard like broken electric wires.
• Do not eat food and drink water until they have been checked for
flood contamination.
• Report broken utility lines(electricity, water,gas,and telephone) to
appropriate agencies/ authorities.
• Do not turn on the main switch or use appliances and other
equipment until they have been checked by competent technicians.
• Consult health authorities for immunization requirements, if
necessary.
• Do not go “sightseeing” in disaster areas. Your presence might
hamper rescue and other emergency operations.
