ION EXCHANGE

TUTORIAL
TUTORIAL 1
An ion exchange process using resin to remove copper ion from aqueous solution is conducted in a 1.0
inch diameter column of 1.2 ft high. The flow rate is 1.5 gph and the break point occur at 7.0 min.
Integrating the breakthrough curve gives a ratio of usable capacity to total capacity of 0.60. Calculate
the diameter of the new tower that will be 3.0 ft high and operate at 4.5 gph. What is the break point
time of the new tower.

Answer: Diameter = 1.732inch, new tb = 24.5 min

TUTORIAL 2
In a given run using a flow rate of 0.2 m 3/h in an ion exchange tower with a
column height of 0.40 m, the break point occurred at 8.0 min. The ratio of
usable capacity to total equilibrium capacity is 0.65. What is the height of a
similar column if the break point time is 13.0 min, with the same flow rate.

Answer: Height of the column = 0.563m

TUTORIAL 3
For the case where the cation NH4+ replaces H+ in polystyrene resin with 8% DVB, calculate
the equilibrium constant KA,B. The total resin capacity Q = 2.0 equivalent/L wet bed
volume. The total concentration C = 0.20 N in the solution. Calculate at equilibrium the
equivalents of NH4+ in the resin when the concentration of NH4+ in solutions in 0.04 N.

Answer: qNH4R=0.6684 equiv/L
