 Solid with lowest known density. Education:StanfordUniversity

 Stands up to 2000 times greater load than its own weight.

 Created by SAMUEL STEPHENS KISTLER.
WHAT IS AEROGEL?

 An aerogel is solid with air pockets

dispersed throughout. Aerogels are
essentially the solid framework of a gel.

 A class of porous, solid materials that

exhibit extreme material properties.
TYPES OF
 AEROGEL
• Silica aerogel is the most common type of aerogel.
•Silica
The most extensively studied and used it.
• It is silica-based and can be derived from silica
• gel.
Silica aerogel held entries in GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS for
material properties, including best insulator & lowest density solid.

 Carbon
• Carbon aerogels are composed of particles with sizes in the nanometre range,
covalently bonded together.
• They have very high porosity(over 50%, with diameter under100 nm).
• Surface areas ranging between 400 to 1000 m²/g.
Cont..
 Metal oxide
• Metal oxide aerogels are used as catalysts in various chemical reactions/
transformation for other materials.
• Aerogel made with aluminium oxide are known as alumina aerogels.
• Alumina aerogels are also being considered by NASA for
hypervelocity particle.

 Polymer
Other
 Organic polymers can be used to create aerogels
 SEAgel is made of agar.
 Cellulose
 Cellulose from plants can be to create a flexible aerogel.
 Chalcogel is an aerogel made of chalcogens.
SYNTHESIS OF

PROPERTIES
 lightest
 Flexibility

 Low density

 High strength.

 Variable refractive index

 Low thermal conductivity.

ADVANTAGES
 Flexibility

 Waterproof

 High Resistance

 Aerogel is more expensive, but definitely the

best overall type of insulation.
DISADVANTAGES

 Health issues.

 High production costs.

 Requires more chemicals and usually more time.

APPLICATION
 Thermal insulation
 Electronic components.
 Foundry technology.
 Architecture.

 Pharmacy.
 Space
 Sports wear
CONCLUSION
 Global market - 2011 $951 million, 2015 to 2020 $1598.6
million.
 Very low thermal conductivity.
 Melting temperature 1200°C.

 Lightest and low density.

So it can be said that Aerogels have certainly surprised us in many aspects and it has
gradually begun to fulfil a number of expectations, certainly for a material that is destined
to become one of the most important materials of the 21st century
