 Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is a masonry across the Krishna river at Nagarjuna
Sagar which straddles the border between Guntur Pradesh and Nalgonda
district , Telangana.(16.576o N,79.31o E)
 It is constructed between 1955 and 1967.

 MASONRY DAM DETAILS

a) Length of spillway dam = 471 m

b) Length of non over flow dam = 979 m

c) Maximum height of dam above foundation = 125m

d) Top width = 8.5 m

e) Base width = 97.5 m

f) Gates = 26 No’s (13m wide and 14m tall )

 Gross storage capacity =11.472 billion cubic metres

 Catchment Area : 214,185 km2

a) Length of Left Earth Dam = 2560m

b) Length of Right Earth Dam = 854m

c) Total Length of Earth Dam = 3414m

d) Maximum Height = 128m

e) Top Width = 9.3m


 The Hydroelectric plant has a power generation capacity
of 815.6 MW with 8 units.

 Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is a multi purpose dam which is not only used for
irrigation but also for hydro-electric projects in India.
 Geologists reported that the soil profile is granite kniess overlaid by
quartzite.
 The right canal (Jawahar canal) is 203 km long with maximum
311.5 cumecs capacity and irrigates 1.117 million acres of land in Guntur
and Prakasam districts.
 The left canal (Lalbahadur Shastri canal) is 179 km long with maximum
311.5 cumecs capacity and irrigates 1.008 million acres of land in
Nalgonda, Suryapet, Krishna, West Godavari and Khamman districts.
 The Hydroelectric plant has a power generation capacity
of 815.6 MW with 8 units. 10
