Resistance Grounded System

 Advantages
– Easy to locate ground fault
– Sufficient current for current sensing ground-fault protection
– Eliminate transient overvoltages
– Limit fault current
– Minimize fault energy and damage
– Eliminate the risk of arc flash on first fault
 Disadvantages
– Cost of grounding resistor
– False sense of confidence – dependence on NGR

7
The SE-330
Neutral-Grounding-Resistor Monitor

 The SE-330 is a microprocessor-based neutral-

grounding-resistor monitor that detects NGR
failures and ground faults in resistance-
grounded systems. The SE-330 measures NGR
resistance, current through the NGR, and
transformer neutral-to-ground voltage. The SE-
330 can be used for alarming or tripping circuits.

Approaches to NGR Monitoring:
The Potential Transformer Method

 Does not continuously monitor

the NGR
– Active only when GF present
– Does not monitor NGR
continuity, only measures
neutral-point voltage
 Ferroresonance (with NGR
failure) – causes overvoltage
and overcurrent
 DC faults are not limited NGR

 Hazardous inrush currents
