WHAT IS BUSINESS POLICY ?
• Business policy is the study of the roles and responsibilities of top-level management
, the significant issues affecting organisational success and the decisions affecting
organisation in the long-run …. They define limits ( do’s and don'ts ) within which
decisions must be made
• Business Policy includes guidelines , rules and procedures established to support
efforts to achieve stated objectives
• Policies are guides to decision making and address repetitive or recurring situation.
• Policy defines the area in which decisions are to be made but it does not give the
decision
• A Policy is a verbal , written or implied overall guide setting up boundaries that
supply the general limits and direction in which managerial action will take place
STRUCTURAL IMPLEMENTATION
• An organisational structure is the outline of authority and responsibility
relationship among different job position .It is a formal arrangement of tasks
and sub tasks which are needed to implement strategies .
• Organisational strategies has 3 key components-
• Identifies Formal relationships , including span of control , no of levels in
hierarchy.
• It specifies grouping of individual in departments
• Design of system to ensure effectiveness ,coordination and integration
of efforts across Departments
TYPES OF STRUCTURE
• So in Structural Implementation there are two
kinds of Structure which are as follows –

• Vertical Structure
• Horizontal Structure
VERTICAL STRUCTURE
• A Vertical Organisation Structure is one that relies on managers to command and
control their employees work . A business owner is typically at the top of a vertical
chain of command . There are advantages and disadvantages to a vertical structure .
• The qualities of such structure are as follows –
• Process of differentiation
• Involves divisions of labour and specialization
• Hierarchy of authority
• Vertical Communication
• Centralized Decision Making
• Emphasis on efficiency
ADVANTAGE OF VERTICAL STRUCTURE
• In a Vertical Structure there are various Advantages –
• Top-Down Management -
• If an entrepreneur is on top , he gets to transmit his ideas down the chain of
command .He relies on managers in the middle to communicate and implement his
directives .
• Relaxing Rules -
• Although small business do not operate in a context like the military where vertical
control is essential for survival , some business find it beneficial to find ways to keep
a vertical structure and maintain their competitive advantage.
• Surviving in Evolving Markets -
• Vertical structure are efficient because of their clear reporting relationships , but they
often aren’t flexible enough to survive evolving Markets
HORIZONTAL STRUCTURE
• A flat organisation ( also known as horizontal organisation) has an organizational
structure with few or no level of middle management between staff and executives ….
Tall and flat organisation differ based on how many levels of management are
present in the organisation and how much control managers are endowed with .

• Features of Horizontal Structure are as follows-


• Shared Tasks
• Flexible rules and regulations
• Horizontal Communication
• Decentralization Decision Making
• Emphasis on Learning
ADVANTAGES OF HORIZONTAL STRUCTURE
• In a Horizontal Structure there are various advantages –
• Employee-Centred Approach –
• The horizontal organisational structure and the employees – centred approach
to leadership focus on the ability of employees to come up with innovative
solutions
• Teamwork –
• Horizontal organisation structure in an organisation places emphasis on the
collective goal of the company
• Performance Incentive –
• Since horizontal organizational structure emphasizes the group when a group
works well together , everyone benefits . Each individual has an incentive for
the group to succeed rather than a power struggle.
