PLC
AMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLERS
Richard E. Morley founded Bedford Associates and invented the
first programmable logic controller or PLC in 1968

• The PLC is a type of

industrial digital
computer.

• It continuously
monitors the status
of the devices
connected as
inputs.

• It Processes the
WHY
PLC ?
• TO ELIMINATE THE USE OF RELAYS IN
TEDIOUS PROCESS.

• TO AUTOMATE MACHINES IN
INDUSTRIES.

• TO MINIMIZE HUMAN ERRORS.

• REDUCING HUMAN EFFORTS.

ARCHIETECTURE
OF PLC
INPUT AND OUTPUT MODULE
• Can be Analog or Digital.
• I/P : Sensors, Switches , Selector switch,
4-20mA, 0-5v, Analog transmitter etc..
• O/P : Relays, Lights, Valves, and Drives
etc..

POWER SUPPLY
• Usually input output modules require
24V DC .
• processor require 5V DC

CPU
• The central processing unit controls and
processes all operations within the PLC
and hence called brain of the PLC.

PROGRAMMING SOFTWARE
• It is programmed using a programming
language called Ladder Logic
TASKS PERFORMED WITH PLC’s :

INTERLOCKING VARIETY OF CALCULATIONS

SEQUENCING COMMUNICATION

COUNTING

TIMING
IMPLEMENTATION OF
PLC LOGIC
TEXTUAL LANGUAGE
• Instructions List (IL)
• Structured Text (ST)

GRAPHICAL LANGUAGE
• Ladder Diagrams (LD)
• Function Block Diagram (FBD)
• Sequential Function Chart (SFC)
Among several programming languages LADDER LOGIC
DIAGRAM is the most basic and simplest form of programming
the PLC.
LADDER LOGIC DIAGRAMS :
• Among several programming languages LADDER LOGIC DIAGRAM is the most
basic and simplest form of programming the PLC.
• This diagram shows the basic ladder logic programming
• In which a single lamp is controlled by two push buttons

• When Push button

switch 1 is closed
the lamp glows

• Also, when Push

button switch 2 is
closed the lamp
glows
HOW VARIOUS PARAMETERS IN
THE HUGE INDUSTRY ARE

Data Acquisition
SCADA
 A SCADA is a system that is used for monitoring,
analyzing and controlling an industrial process .

 A SCADA system is capable of real time

monitoring and management of physical
asset dispersed over very large
geographical area.

 With the adoption of modern IT standards

such as SQL and web-basedFEATURES
applications,
today’s SCADA allows for real-time
• Alarm plant
Handling
information to be accessed•from anywhere
Trend Curves
around the world. Patterns
• Data Access and
Retrieval
WHY SCADA ?
 Before SCADA, plant personnel had to
monitor and control industrial processes via
selector switches, push buttons, and dials for
analog signals.

 This was a tedious process and consumes a

lot of time to supervise the whole industry

 This gave birth to SCADA

Manual Monitor SCADA

WATER STORAGE AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM
FOR PHARMACEUTICALS
USING
PLC AND SCADA.

• Water is one of the major commodities used by the
pharmaceutical industry.
• Quality of water plays an unexceptional role in
pharmaceutical industry
• There is no point in producing qualityWATER
water unless it is
STORAGE
correctly stored and distributed.
AND
DISTRIBUTIO
N SYSTEM
WHY WATER IS MORE IMPORTANT
• used for reconstitution of products during
synthesis
• During production of the finished product
or,
• As c1eaning agent for rinsing vessels,
In this work the first stage is to,
equipment.
Automate the water storage & distribution for various requirements and control

•• Primary packaging
The level in the materials
storage tank and monitoring etc
• The pH
• Conductivity.
• Temperature.

before distribution which is very important as any small change in these parameters
may hinder the performance of the whole pharmaceutical plant

PLC IMPLEMENTATION
Thus the above mentioned parameters are
controlled and executed based on the logic on the
programmed PLC and the whenever any
parameter goes wrong the system is made safe
with interlocks condition and then the parameter
is controlled as soon as possible

SCADA IMPLEMENTATION
The above process can take place in any
location or the process parameters are huge
that manual intervention is difficult and time
consuming thus implementation of SCADA
plays a huge and vital role in visual monitoring
and controlling this process
CONCLUSION

• Water storage and distribution system using

PLC and SCADA is one of the advantageous
Pharmaceutical industrial process
applications.
• The work uses a Programmable Logic
Controller and SCADA screen which is user
friendly
• By successfully interfacing PLC and SCADA,
