INTRODUCTION
Bitumen plays the role of binding the aggregate together by
coating over the aggregate. It also helps to improve the
strength of the road.

Increasing energy costs and strong worldwide demand for
petroleum has encouraged the development of alternative
binders to modify or replace asphalt bitumen.

The development of alternative binders like sugarcane waste
molasses and plastic wastes (polymers) are helpful in replacing
asphalt bitumen.

Molasses are the end product of the sugar manufacturing process


and once no more sugar can be crystallized from the raw crop.

The disposal of different types of plastic waste produced from
different places causes more problems. These materials posses
different pollution in the environment.

These are mainly non-biodegradable materials.

The proper utilization of waste materials like molasses and


polymer in hot bitumen and aggregate so as to change
pavement performance, to protect environment and to provide
low cost roads.

OBJECTIVES
In India 98% of roads are flexible pavements.
Pavements not designed properly deteriorates fast.
Hence proper and efficient resources are chosen to increase life
time of pavement.
One of the main objective is to reduce cost of construction.
Researches done all around the world has found that waste
materials like fly ash, boiler slag, stone dust, eggshell,
molasses, etc. when partially replaced with bitumen can reduce
cost of construction and enhance properties of bitumen mix.
Bitumen being the major binder in flexible pavement releases
huge amount of CO2.

Aggregate and bitumen bond are easily attacked by water
reaction.
Hence the idea of replacing bitumen with waste materials like
sugarcane molasses and plastic wastes.
Basic intention is to efficiently utilize the waste plastic and
molasses in a constructive way to benefit the society.
Bitumen is partially replaced with waste plastic and sugarcane
molasses as binding material.
The properties of bituminous mix specimen with waste plastic
and sugarcane molasses are checked and compared with
conventional bitumen mix.
The stability values of casted bitumen specimen is found.
Analysis of properties of improved bituminous mix.

NEED
Using molasses we can save our environment by considering
our main global objective “ZERO EMISSION”.
Adding molasses to the bituminous mix the amount of carbon
dioxide decreases and also the use of molasses made products
which are very harmful to the human health.
Bonding of the aggregates is also increased by using molasses.
Modified mix reduces the voids present in the mix.
This reduced the moisture absorption which will led to less
damage of pavements and the sub grade soil and the roads can
sustain heavy traffic and provide better riding quality.

SCOPE
Bitumen pavements are flexible pavements and their stability
and OBC are only determined by using Marshall Test.
There are still various other tests and experiments that should
be conducted to check out for the other properties that are
enhanced by molasses as a partial replacement with bitumen
like viscosity grading, stripping test, penetration, softening
point etc.
Also use of waste materials like molasses as a partial
replacement in different grades of bitumen for making less
impact on environment and making things eco-friendly.

METHODOLOGY
Collect the material – Preparation of mix - aggregates –
bitumen – molasses – plastics
Tests are conducted – MORTH - IS CODE
Test for aggregates – impact - specific gravity - water
absorption - combined flakiness - elongation index
Test for bitumen – penetration – softening - flash and fire -
ductility.
Test for molasses and plastics – viscosity – gauge - sieve
analysis

Mix designs were prepared by proper MORTH gradation limits -
optimum bitumen content -Marshall samples – varying bitumen
percentages - optimum content for SDAC mix.
Marshall Core samples - replacing the molasses content and
plastic to the bitumen - 0% to 20%.
• Test on mixes – specimens de-moulded and water curing was
done for 30 min at 60 ̊C - sample is tested in Marshall Stability
apparatus.
• Stability values – flow values
• Analysis was done to find out at which percentage replacement
of bitumen confirms to MORTH specifications.
• preparation of graphs and report .
