Inductive Reactance in an AC Circuit

Inductive Reactance in an AC Circuit

• When an ac voltage is applied to an inductive circuit as
shown in Fig, the resulting current is changing in value
continuously.

• And an induced emf opposes the continuous change in

the currnet flowing, its effect is measured in ohms.

• This opposition of an inductive circuit to the flow of ac

current is called inductive reactance and is represented
by the symbol XL.
Inductive Reactance in an AC Circuit
• Inductive reactance in ohms may be calculated from
the formula.

XL = j 2 π f L Ω

where f = frequency, Hz
L = inductance, H

•• The
  current through a circuit that contain only
inductive reactance is

where I = rms current, A,

XL = inductive reactance, Ω,
V = rms voltage across the reactance, V

A 0.2 H choke coil with negligible resistance is connected
to a 240 V, 50 Hz supply. Find

(a) the inductive reactance of the coil and

(b) the current flowing,
(c) draw the phasor diagram showing the phase relations
between the current and the applied voltage.
