Outline of the Case Study
• Tata Steel has undertaken CSR initiatives that are unparalleled in its sector
• The company introduced various labor welfare schemes like Free Medical
Aid, Worker’s Provident Fund Scheme and also social schemes like
educational and Medical services
• In order to make it an investor attractive area of business, Tata Steel launched
“Vision 2007” the main focus of which was to be an EVA+ company while
continuing to contribute towards the CSR activities at the current rate
• However, an imbalance between the CSR activities and the new mission of
the company has been identified as a problem statement
• This threatens TATA’s image of community centric CSR sponsor.

increasing efficiency.
• Only Tata steel mines were spared during nationalization of coal sector due to their
employee centric policies under CSR initiatives.
• Tata’s attitude towards CSR attracted PPP (Private Public Partnership) in this field.
• Environmental Management System implementations has won numerous accolades
for TATA Steel.
• Tata’s culture of social responsibility towards the environment gave them a positive
brand value in the international market.
Recommendations
• CSR Activity review should also focus on the Business impacts along
with the Social Impacts.
• NGOs should be encouraged to act as the part of the TATA Steel’s CSR
projects.
• Governments should be involved for targeting the socio-economic
problems in which TATA Steel can help.
• Innovation should be the centre point of TATA Steel’s CSR strategy
focusing both on CSR and Non-CSR plans

• Replacing the factory roofs with
solar panels.

electricity which is high priced

• Collecting all the sewers of
Jamshedpur to TATA’s own
waste water treatment unit
• Distributing the treated water for
non-potable uses.

• This will help them reduce the
operational expenditure incurred
on water for varied purposes
