Brief description
Mr Avinash appointed as General Manager,
administration in Phoenix Industries Ltd.
Because of young age and lack of experience, he
was considered junior executive by his
subordinates.
Administration department had four major
subunits : purchasing, record maintenance, printing
and secretarial services each headed by a
manager.
Four managers had combined experience of 80
years and average age of 45 years.
They viewed his appointment with hesitancy and
suspicion and had liking for previous GM.
Avinash started holding weekly
departmental meetings .
There was no response from the managers.
Avinash changed his operational procedures
to increase efficiency of his department.
He even talked individually to the managers
but the problem continued.
 Gradually he started receiving complaints
about the services they were providing to
other departments.
He admonished his managers in the weekly
meetings but still same issue.
He told the chief operator to redo the job.
After hearing about what happened,
manager called upon other three
mangers for a meeting.
The four discussed their harsh views
against Avinash considering him to be
young , incompetent and tyrant for the
post.
They discussed they could not do
anything against him and decided to
search for another job.
Analysis of problems
Avinash behavior and way of communication was
not effective.
Working environment was not comfortable for
Avinash.
 Managers thought that Avinash didn’t show
confidence in them and considered him tyrant.
Managers considered him young and
incompetent for the post of GM.
Managers were unresponsive in the meetings held
by Avinash.
They were hesitant to speak with Avinash.
Attachment with former GM.
Suggestions to solve the problems
Avinash should have changed his behavior and way
of communication and showed confidence in the
managers.
He could have changed his working style according
to the managers.
Avinash should have talked about the problem to
the top level management.
The managers should not consider about the age
difference and believe in Avinash qualities
The managers could have used their experience to
create a working and healthy environment.
The mangers should have talked about their
problems and actively participated in the meetings.
Conclusion
Lack of COORDINATION between
managers and Avinash.
Large age difference between their ages.
Managers were not treating Avinash as
GM.
Due to lack of experience, Avinash did
not how to handle the situation.
