Aims of Teaching Chemistry

The important aims of teaching chemistry are as follows

1) Knowledge aim: understanding of daily life problems

2) Practical aim: use of principles to understand the environment

3) Development of scientific attitude: change in behavior

4) Cultural aim: to promote logical thinking about chemistry & heritage


Aims of Teaching Chemistry

5) Social aim: welfare and progress of society and social adjustment

6) Vocational aim: understanding chemistry and employment

7) Utilization of leisure time: converting hobbies to small scale industries

8) Psychological aim: producing a balanced and healthy individual

9) Skill aim: changing observation and experience to expertise

Thurber & Collette have proposed the following criteria for the selection of aims.

To make students interested in chemistry

To familiarize the students by the important roles played by chemistry in their
lives

To develop scientific culture among the students

To train the students in methods of science

To prepare students for social and vocational competence

To prepare students to be absorbed in different branches of chemistry
