Characteristics of good quality seed

• How do you determine a good quality

seed?
1.
VIABILITY

This is the capability of

the seeds to germinate
when sown in seedbed
or seed box. Seedlings
should appear to be
strong and healthy.
2.
MATURI
TY

- Matured seeds taken from

matured fruits will assure
you that embryo in seeds
are fully developed..

3.
TRUE TO
TYPE

Seeds acquired or
bought should be free
from other type of seed
plants.
4.
FREE FROM
SEEDBORNE
DESEASES

Check if the seeds have

blemishes or stains
where insect eggs,
fungus or bacteria
thrives.
5.
DAMAGE
FREE

Seeds that are cracked

and deformed should
not be used.
6.
Free from
foreign
materials

Seeds to be used must be

clean or free any type of
contaminants such as dirt,
stones, leaves, weed seeds
and others.
include floating on water, rag doll
and petri-dish. You have to test the
SEED
seeds if your seeds to be used are
TESTING
your own produced or bought from
some farmers in order to determine
the percentage of germination.

No need to test the seeds

that comes from reliable SEED
source like East West because TESTING
the % of germination is
already indicated on the
package..
Not all seeds have the ability
to germinate due to the
following:
1. High moisture- .

2. Long storage

3. Immaturity
SEED TESTING METHODS
Common Methods of
testing the viability of
seeds
RAG-DOLL METHOD
or rolled towel method is the most practical
method of testing vegetable and corn seeds. It
consists of placing the seeds in a piece of cloth.
Example, 30 cm wide and 80 or more cm long. Spread out the cloth thoroughly
and wet it. Place a sample of seeds to be tested. When all the rows of on the
cloth are provided with seeds, fold the margin of the cloth over to hold the
seeds in place. Soak the doll in a pail of water for an hour or two. Add 1 or 2
percent of formalin to the water to prevent the growth of molds. Then allow
the surplus water to drain and keep the pail covered to hold moisture for a
week or two in a warm room. Examine the doll by unrolling it carefully so as not
to displace the seeds from their own squares. Count the sprouts and determine
the percentage of seed germination. from Pinterest

SEEDBOX METHOD
• This germination test
gives the same
satisfactory result as the
rag-doll method. It
consists of a box of sand
about 12 cm deep, of
convenient length and
width about 40 by 50 cm.

Petri dish method

In this method, the seeds are place in a small

shallow dish of thin glass or plastic with moist
sand and covered by another glass or plastic.
The medium surrounding the seeds must be
kept moist and warm until the test is over. It is
also known as the dinner plate or blotter
method.
Floating in water method
How to determine the Percentage of germination
of seeds?

FORMUL
A:
Percentage of Germination =
Number of seeds germinated X 100
Number of seeds tested
PROBLE
M:Mr. Joaquin bought seeds of tomatoes from his
friend. He tested the seeds using the ragdoll method.
After a week he found out that only seeds
germinated.
What is the percentage of germination?

NOTE:
If you found out that the results of % of germination is
below 80%, you need to adjust your seed bulk or
seeding rate by using this formula.

Adjusted amount of seeds = 100

EXAMPL
E: Bean tested 220 seeds of long purple eggplant and there
Mr.
are only 170 seeds germinated. What is the % of germination
of eggplant seeds? Is there a need for Mr. Bean to adjust his
seeds to sow? If yes, how many seeds he will sow to meet the
220 seedlings that he needs in his garden?
