PAPER 4

Rules:
1. Be on time

3. Hand in your work on time –sit outside class if you did not do your work
4. Classwork given-no looking at your notes & do correction after work marked.
5. Test will be given after each topic.
6. Grade given will be group according to colour coding (Green for A-B, Blue C-D, Red E &
U (Danger zone)
7. Seek help from tutor if you don’t understand topic but make appointment.
8. Homework –rarely given.
9. Copy notes-slides or given through whatsapp. (Make simple notes from lesson)
10.Read regularly as told because you will be asked any time.
11.Aim for A-C only.

Environmental Degradation:
• Define what it is
• Pollution ; what, causes, types
• Factors that lead to degraded of rural environment
• Causes and consequences of misuse or overuse of rural land
(Population pressure, Soil erosion, Land degradation, Deforestation, Desertification, Poor
farming practices)
• Policy to improve degraded rural environment (Reclamation, Land reform, Soil
conservation, Afforestation, Environmentally , Sensitive Areas (ESAs) & Waste disposal
• Understand –urban degradation & mitigate through policy (success or failure -Urban
regeneration & Urban redevelopment) –case studies
• risk factors affecting environments, environmental protection policies and their impact:
• Identifying:
Risk factors: general risk factors e.g. population pressure and specific risk factors (to
time and/or place) e.g. road building project. Awareness of the need for some form of
environmental protection.
Measures: proposed or taken.
Outcomes: relative success/failure. Unexpected effects, further needs, etc.
 
*Study of the Earth summits of Rio de Janeiro 1996 and Kyoto 1997 and the targets of the
Kyoto Protocol.

Positive and negative.
