PERPENDICULARS

Two lines are said to be perpendicular if they intersect such that the
angles form between them are Right Angles or 90 degree.
UNDERSTANDING
PERPENDICULARS

O
In the given figure
the lines AB and CD
are perpendicular as
they intersect each
other in 90 degrees.
METHOD OF RULER AND COMPASS

STEP- 1 Given a line AB and a

point P as in the picture.
STEP-2 With P as centre , draw
an arc which intersects the line
AB at R and S.
STEP-3 Using the same radius
and with R and S as centers,
construct two arcs that intersect
at a point (Q)
STEP-4 JOIN PQ. THUS LINE PQ IS PERPENDICULAR TO LINE AB
ANOTHER WAY TO DRAW PERPENDICULAR
USING RULER AND COMPASS
Step-1 Draw a line segment AB
Step-2 Find the mid point C. Take length of AC as
radius. With A as centre draw a circle and draw
another circle with same radius with B as centre.
Step-3 Both circles intersect each other at P and
Q.
Step-4 Now join PQ which intersects line AB at C.
<ACP and <BCP are right angles. So, line PQ is
perpendicular to line AB.
