 The vegetation in the Himalayan region varies with height and
altitude.
 There are tropical deciduous forests at the foothills example,
Sal.
 Above tropical deciduous forests there are sub-tropical hill
vegetation. Trees like Green Oak, Chestnut and Chir-pine are
commonly found there.
 Coniferous forests are found at the height between 1,600 and
3,300 metres. Trees that are found there are: Blue pines,
Cedars, Silver firs and Deodars.
 The Alpine variety of plants such as shrubs, scrubs and grass
are commonly found at Coniferous forests.
 Beyond the height of about 6,000 metres , the mountain
remains snow-clad and no vegetation grows there.

 The ‘Chipko Andolan’ helped to save many trees.

WILD LIFE
• India has a rich and varied wildlife. Some example are
elephants, tigers, lion etc.
• Lions of the Gir forests Gujrat are well-known.
• Tigers are found in Himalayan region, the forests of
Madhya Pradesh and Sundarbans of West Bengal.
• A large variety of deer and antelope, monkey and
langurs, wolves…… are found in the hill
• We have more than 80,000 species of animals and
12,000 species of birds.
POINTS TO KNOW:-
 Camel, wild-asses are found in the Thar region in Gujarat.
 Elephants and Rhinoceroses are found in Assam, Karnataka
and Kerala.

 There are 89 national park in India.


 Kaziranga national park is the largest national park of India
located in Golaghat district of Assam.
 Jim Corbett national park is the first national park
established in India at 1936 as ‘‘Hailey National Park’’ to
protect the endangered Bengal tigers.
 Madhya Pradesh has been traditionally called Tiger state of
