Virtual LANs

VLAN introduction
VLAN - Virtual Local Area Network.
VLAN is a logical network that can group devices/
users regardless of their different physical location.
VLAN is created at the switch.
VLANs logically segment switched networks based
on the functions, project teams, or applications of the
organization regardless of the physical location or
connections to the network.
All workstations and servers used by a particular
workgroup share the same VLAN, regardless of the
physical connection or location.
Why VLAN?
VLAN provides following advantages:-
Segmentation
 Solve broadcast problem
 Reduce the size of broadcast domains
 Allow us to add additional layer of security
Simplified Network design and deployment
Easier Troubleshooting and management
 Make device management easier
 Allow us to implement the logical grouping of devices by
function instead of location
1. Segmentation
We have two dept.
 Sales
 Finance
Switch / Network
Broadcast domain

Two potential problems

 Traffic Congestion and Poor Performance
 Security concerns

To address these problems, we have three possible solutions here

Solution 1: Buy More Switches
and Routers

1. Buy more switches and routers

Solution 2: VLAN with Switch and
router
Solution 2: VLAN with Switch
and router
Solution 2: VLAN with Switch

Solution 3: VLAN with
Multilayer Switch
Solution 3: VLAN with
Multilayer Switch
2. Simplified Network design and
deployment
Easier Troubleshooting and
management
VLAN Types
Static VLAN (Port Based VLAN)
Dynamic VLAN (MAC address Based)
