The coronavirus COVID-19 is affecting 124 countries and territories around the
world. 
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
 Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is defined as illness caused by a novel
coronavirus now called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2
(SARS-CoV-2; formerly called 2019-nCoV), which was first identified amid an
outbreak of respiratory illness cases in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China.
  
It was initially reported to the WHO on December 31, 2019.
 On January 30, 2020, the WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global
health emergency. 
 On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, its first
such designation since declaring H1N1 influenza a pandemic in 2009

UPDATES
 All incoming travelers, including Indian nationals, arriving from or having
visited China, Italy, Iran, Korea, France, Spain and Germany after 15th Feb,
2020 shall be quarantined for a minimum period of 14 days. This will come
into effect from 1200 GMT on 13th March 2020.
  Under pressure to respond to the novel coronavirus, President Donald
Trump on Wednesday suspended all travel from Europe to the United States
for 30 days starting on Friday in order to fight outbreak.

Coronavirus Impact On The Global Economy

 The virus outbreak has become one of the biggest threats to the global economy and
financial markets.
 Major institutions and banks have cut their forecasts for the global economy, with the
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development being one of the latest to do so.
 The manufacturing sector in China has been hit hard by the virus outbreak.
 The impact on economy of countries which we are going to discuss are:
1. China
2. USA
3. France
4. South Korea
5. India
Impact on China
 China is the world’s second-largest economy
and leading trading nation.

 Economists polled by Reuters between 7-13


February said they expected China’s
economic growth to slump to 4.5% in the
first quarter of 2020, down from 6% in the
previous quarter – the slowest pace since
the financial crisis.
Disruption to commerce

 China makes up a third of manufacturing globally, and is the world's largest


exporter of goods.
 Some carmakers including Nissan and Hyundai temporarily closed factories
outside China because they couldn’t get parts.
 Restrictions have affected the supply chains of big companies such as
industrial equipment manufacturer JCB and car maker Nissan. Both rely on
China's production and its 300 million migrant workers.
 Fear of the coronavirus outbreak means that some people are choosing to
avoid activities that might expose them to the risk of infection, such as going
out shopping.

• Credit rating agency Moody’s cut the forecast for
Korea’s economic growth to 1.9%, from the earlier
2.1% due to Covid-19 impact.
• Korean exports have fallen by 6.1% year-on-year
in January 2020 due to fewer days worked.
• Tour cancellations and suspension of flights to
China will cause a significant loss to the Korean
economy, opined Ferrier.

Corona virus is slowly spreading to the rest of the
world which was largely concentrated in China, and
is expected to have adverse economic consequences.
If China's economy slows to 1.2 per cent in January-
March quarter, the GDP shock to India from the
demand side could be about 0.4- 0.5 percent.
