BIOMASS ENERGY
Biomass energy is the use of organic
material to generate energy. Biomass is
just organic matter – think, stuff that’s
made in nature – like wood pellets, grass
clippings and even dung.
3
EXAMPLES OF BIOMASS
AND THEIR USES FOR
ENERGY
Wood and wood processing wastes— burned to heat buildings,
to produce process heat in industry, and to generate electricity
Agricultural crops and waste materials— burned as a fuel or
converted to liquid biofuels
Food, yard, and wood waste in garbage— burned to generate
electricity in power plants or converted to biogas in landfills
Animal manure and human sewage— converted to biogas,
which can be burned as a fuel.
4
How can biomass generate
electricity?
Biomass can generate electricity in a
number of ways, but the most common
is combustion – burning agricultural
waste or woody materials to heat
water and produce steam, which spins
turbines

SOURCES OF BIOMASS
ENERGY
The major biomass sources currently used are sugar
cane and corn to produce bioethanol, and rapeseed
for biodiesel production. Other sources are also used
such as sunflower seeds, soybean, canola, peanuts,
jatropha, coconut and palm oil for biodiesel, and
wheat, sugar beet, sweet sorghum and cassava for
bioethanol.

BIOMASS IN THE PHILIPPINES:
• Currently, biomass technologies used in the Philippines include the use of
bagasse as boiler fuel for cogeneration; rice and coconut husks dryers for
crop drying; biomass gasifiers for mechanical and electrical applications;
fuelwood and agricultural wastes for oven kilns; and furnaces and cooking
stoves for cooking and heating purposes. Biomass technology represents
the largest installations in the Philippines in comparison with the other
renewable energy or energy-efficient and greenhouse gas abating
technologies.

BIOMASS IN THE PHILIPPINES:
• Biomass energy has, and continues to play a vital role in the
Philippines’ energy supply. Nearly 30 percent of the energy for
the 100 million plus people living in the Philippines comes from
biomass, and is mainly used for household cooking by the rural
population. Biomass energy sources, account for approximately
15 percent of the primary energy use in the Philippines.
10
BIOMASS IN THE PHILIPPINES:
• These resources that are available in the Philippines can
generate biomass power projects with a potential capacity of
more than 200 MW. It is estimated that about 70 percent of this
biomass use can be traced to the cooking needs of the
residential sector, as compared to the industrial and commercial
applications that account for the remainder.
