Subordinating Conjunctions
• A subordinating conjunction is a word which joins together a
dependent clause and an independent clause.
• Dependent Clause = a clause that cannot stand alone as a
complete sentence
• Independent Clause =  a clause that can stand alone as
a sentence which expresses a complete thought
• For example:
1. He literally stitched mail sacks until his fingers bled.

2. The crew could see the whale, which had surfaced only
50m behind them.
3. Do you know the butcher who went to court on Saturday?
4. I am not tidying the dishes unless Peter helps.
5. The excellence of a gift lies in how appropriate it is rather
than how valuable it is.
3. Correlative Conjunctions
• Correlative conjunctions are pairs of conjunctions which
work together to coordinate two items.
• Example:
1. The company deals in both hardware and software.
2. Do you care whether we have noodles or rice for dinner?
3. He not only studies hard but also works well.
4. Just as many Americans love football, so many Canadians
love ice hockey.
5. The more you can dream, the more you can do.
