    Hippocrates was a Greek physician born around 460 BC in Kos, Greece who is considered the father of Western medicine. He founded the first known medical school called the Asclepieion of Kos on the island of Kos, his birthplace. Hippocrates was the first to believe that diseases had natural rather than supernatural or religious causes. He emphasized clinical observation and medical diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment and is credited with being the first to practice clinical observation and clinical medicine. He made many important contributions to medicine including describing clubbing of the fingers and inventing the Hippocratic bench to aid in setting bones.
