DIFFERENTIATED CURRICULUM

A learning program that ideally meets the academic

needs and interests of every student
Teachers offer different approaches to what students learn
(CONTENT), how students learn (PROCESS) and how students
demonstrate what they have learned (PRODUCT)
• Gifted Learners- They comprehend
complex ideas quickly, learn more
rapidly and in greater depth. So provide
them time for in-depth exploration, to
CATEGORIES manipulate ideas and draw
For generalizations about seemingly
Differentiated unconnected concepts, and to ask
Instruction provocative questions.
• Creative Learners- Activity oriented
lessons
• Slow Learners- Require assistance
• Under Achievers- Constant
encouragement, simplified versions of
the lessons
• Learning Disabled- Depending on their
disability, provide assistants,
counselling, remedial lessons. Etc.
STRATEGIES

•  Create a differentiated learning environment

• Prepare thoughtful lessons backed by data based on
students’ learning style
• Tailor assignments based on students’ learning goals
•  Adjust your lesson content based on student needs
• Group students by shared interest, topic, or ability for
assignments
• Assess students’ learning using formative assessment
• Continually assess and adjust lesson content
CHALLENGES FACED BY TEACHERS

• Perceived Fairness
To overcome- Provide families with detailed
reasoning for curriculum differentiation while trying
to shift the focus away from grades in the classroom
• Placement
This can be accomplished with a simple pre-test at
the beginning of each course that allows the teacher
to see where each student stands
• Resources
This can be resolved with some preparation before
the academic year begins
