Past Simple
 is a verb tense which is used to show
that a completed action took place at a
specific time in the past.

 is also frequently used to talk


about past habits and generalizations.

How to form a Past Simple

For Regular verbs:


 verb + ed
I walked to school yesterday.
She washed her clothes.

How to form a Past Simple

For verbs ending in “e”


 verb + d
I lived in Brazil for two years.
He closed the window.

For verbs ending in “y” preceded by a


consonant
 y becomes i + ed
He spied on his neighbours.
Shauna studied French for five years.

For Irregular verbs:


 all Irregular verbs have unique past simple
form
I built that shed last year. (build)
She taught English in 2017. (teach)

Past Simple in Question form

For all verbs (Regular and Irregular)


 Did + verb
Did she arrive?
Did you ride your bicycle yesterday?

Past Simple in Negation

For all verbs (Regular and Irregular)


 did + not (didn't) + verb
They did not go.
We didn't walk to school this morning.

Past Perfect
tense
Past Perfect 10

tense
 indicates that an action was completed (finished or
"perfected") at some point in the past before something
else happened

 is used to make it clear that one event happened


before another in the past. It does not matter which
event is mentioned first - the tense makes it clear which
one happened first

 had + the past participle of the main verb
(verb + ed)
They had cleared the table before the
manager came.

 had + not (hadn't) + past participle (verb + ed)
They hadn't opened the window.
I hadn't listened to the news.

 had + not (hadn't) + past participle (unique past
perfect form)

I had not eaten at that restaurant before


today.

My friends hadn’t ever gone to France.
