What is a ‘novel’ corona virus?
Wuhan, China, has been named corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-
19) – ‘CO’ stands for corona, ‘VI’ for virus, and ‘D’ for disease.
Formerly, this disease was referred to as ‘2019 novel corona virus’
or ‘2019-nCoV.’
The COVID-19 virus is a new virus linked to the same family of
Corona viruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness
ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases. A novel corona
virus (CoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in
humans.
Countries around the globe have heightened their surveillance to quickly
diagnose potential new cases of 2019-nCoV. More people infected with
this virus have since been identified in China, as well as cases imported
into other countries, including in the European Region.
Countries in the European Region are encouraged to continue preparing
in case this new virus is imported, in line with the International Health
Regulations (2005). WHO has published guidance for all countries,
including how to monitor for sick people, test samples, treat patients,
control infection in health centers, maintain the right supplies and
communicate with the public.
Government activities in Bangladesh….
According to the World Health Organization, Bangladesh has so far confirmed 48 cases of
corona virus infection and five of them have died. The death rate in Bangladesh is more
than double the global rate of 4.5 per cent (20,834 deaths in 462,684 infected).
On 24 March, the government announced the closure of all public and private offices for a
10 day period – from March 26 to April 4 – as part of its efforts to contain the spread of the
novel corona virus. Public transport services will also be suspended from March 26 to
April 4 across the country. Hospitals, kitchen markets, drug stores and other emergency
services, however, will remain open. On 1 April, the government announced to extend the
deadline with another week until 11 April, 2020.
The government has repeatedly been asking people to stay home in efforts to contain the
spread of the virus. But soon after the 24 March announcement, people started leaving the
capital for their village homes in droves. Several local media outlets reported that
hundreds of city dwellers boarded buses and trains to head back home, fuelling fears of
further spread of the virus throughout the country.
On 1 April 2020, the government cancelled all public programmers marking Pahela
Baishakh, the Bengali New Year, to avoid mass gatherings as part of its efforts to contain
the spread of the novel corona virus. The Bengali New Year 1427 will begin on April 14.
