Instructional support includes the materials


prescribed for learners and teachers.
The prominent materials for instructional support
are course book or text book and teacher text or
handbook.
 Each of these is described in the following slides
in detail.
COURSE BOOK/ TEXT BOOK
A course book or a text book is an authentic book used
by students in learning a subject in a particular class.
It includes a large number of learning situations,
activities and facts.
The materials in it are prepared and arranged by experts
on the basis of valid principles which are philosophically,
sociologically, psychologically and culturally sound.
COURSE BOOK/ TEXT BOOK
They are worthwhile reference points.
They specify what to learn, what to apply and
what to remember.
It can rightly be seen as a guide for the teacher, a
memory aid for the learners and a trustworthy
record of what has been learnt and to be learnt.

It gives logically arranged learning materials.


It helps the teacher to proceed step by step.
It provides variety exercises.
It ensures higher tasks for higher classes.
It can meet individual differences among learners to an
extent.

In other words, handbooks are those books given
to teachers with the object of advising on how to
teach the prescribed text book.
It gives accurate guidance for improving the
language skills of pupils.

 It aims at updating teachers’ knowledge and equipping them to
transact the curricular area in most effective manner.
 It gives teachers necessary guidelines so as to improve their
teaching and evaluation.
 It ensures sufficient background knowledge for each unit in the
course book.
 It familiarises the techniques and procedures followed in the
course book.
 Source book conveys to the teachers the knowledge as to how
to deal with each item in each unit.

models, samples and suggestions for supplementary activities.

in the realm of psychology are detailed in it.
