Introduction
• Slums are traditionally described as dense urban
settlements, usually displaying characteristics
such as crowded and compact housing units,
informal delivery of utilities, and unofficial
recognition by local government.
• In the Philippines, residents of slum areas are
commonly referred to as "squatters" and have
historically been subject to relocation or forced
demolition. With a steadily growing metropolitan
area, Metro Manila is subject to a densiying
population of slum dwellers a 2014 article states
that Manila has an estimated 4 million people living
in slums.
Satistics
• Tondo is the largest of the 16 districts of the City of
Manila in terms of population and land area. It is
also the most densely populated district in the city.
Many of the city's slums are located here. The
most prominent slum area is the Smokey
Mountain, a landfill that was closed in 1995 and
was redeveloped into a mid-rise housing for the
city's poor.
• Today it's one of the most densely populated
places on earth. There are 80,000 people per
square kilometre.
History
Tondo is the largest district in terms of area and
population and is known for being one of the
poorest and underdeveloped areas of the country.
Rapid urbanization, inadequate infrastructure and
basic services in large towns and cities have led to
the fast increase of slums and informal settlements,
like slums, in the country. Many of those informal
settlements are being found in Tondo area
The population was 10.5 million in Manila in 2000.
At that time an estimated 35% of the urban
population lives in slums lacking basic services.

Smoky Mountain
• Smokey Mountain, began in the 1950s as an
unplanned dumpsite near the slums of Manila‘s
Tondo district. For decades, the area was a
magnet for poor migrants who eked out a living as
scavengers.
• In the 1980s, the population climbed to 30,000
and the area became an international showcase
for urban squalor and misery.
• In the 1990s, the government worked to close
Smokey Mountain as a dumpsite and by 2001 had
moved the informal settlers living in the area into
temporary housing. Most of the smoldering 20-
hectare dumpsite was bulldozed and five-story
blocks were built for residents of the area. But with
the dump gone, many lost their main source of
income – scavenging

Netherlands settled for five days in the
Heath slums of Tondo and did a lot of medical Environment
checks for research. it was clear that
the common health was terrible, the
biggest amount of disease were skin

organic pollution of the water in Metro
Manila comes from inland sources,
both solid waste and sanitation.
About 6000 tons of waste a day is
brought to dumpsites in Metro
Manila or is dumped into canals and

Slum Tourism
The conditions of slum areas such as Smokey
Mountain are almost ironically becoming tourist
destinations worldwide. Popularly known as slum
tours, these are organized excursions offered to
those who want to catch a glimpse of the urban
poor realities in the developing world.
Similar to how Reality Tours & Travel takes visitors
to the slums of Dharavi in Mumbai India, Smokey
Tours organizes slum tours in the poverty-blighted
areas around Smokey Mountain, Tondo.  Founded
by a Dutch woman named Juliette Kwee, Smokey
Tours aims to show people the “other side of
Manila”.
For a price of Php 950, one can book a tour around
the slum, which includes walking around recycling
areas, visiting residential houses, and seeing how
the staple food called pagpag—scavenged bones
and leftovers re-cooked—is made.
Problem
Because of the ordure that can’t be flushed away in the
sewers, the chances to have an infection in a small
scratch are huge.
The lack of clean water for washing will turn into a
seriously bad hygiene and that will be the cause of
spreading a disease a lot faster.
The highly populated area will also help the spreading
of diseases.
The lack of clean drinking water will cost a lot of lives
because of the moisture deficit and if they drink it it will
cause heavy stomach cramps and diarhea.
Unicef; Slum Improvement Project
Unicef works on behalf of the United Nations. Give all
children, around the whole world, what they deserve.
That is the mission given to Unicef by the United
Nations. Their approach is based on a large scale; due
to the worldwide connections that the UN has. They are
helping children to overcome:
Poverty, Diseases ,Violence, Discrimination
The Tondo Foreshore Urban Renewal Project was
formed in January 1974 by an international
organization which started missions to the Philippines
to investigate the urban conditions of Metro manila

Solution
You can tackle the outcomes and help the people. This
is mostly a very expensive operation. The victims of
the health problems will add up every day, they are
able to help them but the next day more people will be
sick and want to be helped.
The second one is the way when you tackle the origin
of the problem. Then less and less people will be sick
and fewer people want to be helped. This way will
probably cost more but that is one ‘payment’ and that is
it.
