R.A.F.T.

+ Write
1st grade Science

Students have completed a 2 week unit on plants with the


following standards and objectives by exploring books,
videos, and hands-on exploration.
STANDARDS:
S1L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the basic
needs of plants and animals.
a. Develop models to identify the parts of a plant—root, stem, leaf, and
flower.
b. Ask questions to compare and contrast the basic needs of plants (air,
water, light, and nutrients) and animals (air, water, food, and shelter).
c. Design a solution to ensure that a plant or animal has all of its needs
met.
OBJECTIVES:
Students will:
• Identify parts of plants
• Observe the growth of a plant
• Associate plants with literature
• Dramatize a story
• Write about experiences with plants
• Identify ways of taking care of plants

Guiding questions for students as they are writing:

-Role of the writer. What is the writer’s role?


-Audience. Who will be reading this writing?
-Format. What is the best way to present this writing?
-Topic. Who or what is the subject of this writing?
In this culminating writing assignment, students will
choose a R.A.F.T. (which they have previously been
exposed too) and write to demonstrate their
knowledge of the concepts.
Students will have free choice in which R.A.F.T. they
choose, then-

Day1: Choose 1 R.A.F.T.; then plan, research, and


take notes accordingly
Day 2: Research and draft writing
Day 3: Finalize draft and write final copy
Day 4: Finish
