    When water in a pot is heated, the water at the bottom heats up first and becomes less dense, causing it to rise through the cooler water above. As the warmer water reaches the top it cools back down, becoming denser, and sinks back toward the bottom. This continuous circulation of the water caused by differences in density as it is heated and cooled is known as convection. Convection is the transfer of heat by the actual movement or circulation of the heated molecules within a fluid such as a liquid or gas from warmer regions to cooler regions.
