Gregor Mendel

“Father of Genetics”

INTRODUCTION

 Gregor Mendel known as the “father of Genetics” was a monk who discovered
the basic principles of heredity. Becoming the foundation of modern genetics
and leading to the study of heredity.
Early life

He was born in Heinzendorf, Austria on july 22,


1822
He atended secondary school at the age of 11
He graduated from a two-year program at the
philosophical institute of the univerSITY of Vienna
He then joined the Augustian Order at the St.
Thomas monastery
Experiments and Traits

 Around1854 he began to research the transmission of


heredity through plants
 Hesaw that living things pass traits to the next generation by
something which remains unchanged – which we call genes
 He realized that traits could skip a generation – lost traits
will then appear again in another generation – he called this
recessive traits
 Healso identified recessive and dominant traits that pass
from parents to offspring (the baby)
Afterworks and Death

 Allof his Works were little unknown until a


few years after his death
 He died on january 6, 1884 at the age of 61
 He did a really great job contributing to
science
