KINESIOLOGY

(STARTING
POSITIONS-2) KNEELING

DR. IQRA KARAMAT PT

KNEELING
• TOPIC OUTLINE:
• Body position
• Muscle work
• Effects and uses
KNEELING

• BODY POSITIONS:
The body is supported on the knees
which may be together or slightly apart. The
lower leg rests on the floor with the feet plantar-
flexed.
KNEELING
• MUSCLE WORK:
The lower leg is relaxed; the body must be stabilised
on the knees.
• There is co-ordination b/w the flexors and extensors of the
knee, to balance the femora vertically on the knees.
• The muscle work of the rest of the body is as in standing
except,
i. The extensors of the hip
ii. Flexors of the lumber spine work more strongly to maintain
the angle of pelvic tilt.
• A decrease in angle of pelvic tilt and increase in extension of
the lumber spine occur in sitting position because of the
tension of the rectus femoris, which is stretched across the
front of both the hip and knee joints.
KNEELING
• EFFECTS AND USES:
• The Centre of gravity of the body is lower than in
standing position and that’s why slightly more
stable and uncomfortable for most of the people .
• It is used as starting position for backward
movement in a sagittal plane and to train control
of the hip joints and lower trunk in preparation for
the standing position during which the feet are
pressed to the floor by the extensors of the knees
and dorsiflexors.
